The Dallas Cowboys are forced into an impossible decision as with training camp now just a day
away. One positional battle is not getting the credit that it deserves and it's going to be
heavily watched during this week's activities in Oxnard and will force Brian Schottenheimer,
Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and the entire team to make some tough decisions down the line.
But it's something that is really gone under the car. No one's really seen it and now today
it's an interesting topic to have in terms of that wide receiver room.
Let's start with that. It's a full depth chart. You have a multitude of different players on here
and I believe you're over 13 players strong throughout your wide receiver, which is crazy
in its own light. But it does make for some tough decisions. Not because you have 13, but because
the top 3 are pretty obvious. In fact, maybe even the top 4 who are going to make the 53-man roster
relatively obvious. After that, there's a lot of different options and they're going to have to
make some tough decisions and now they're going to be in some interesting positions.
Now, they do have some obvious cut candidates in some way because they have some guys who,
well, they're not really guaranteeing a lot of money. Marcos Valdez-Cantling being one of those,
there's only about $187,000 of that million-dollar-plus contract is guaranteed or
in the dead cap space. So maybe he's the most likely cut candidate, but it's an intriguing
note to see who's going to make that wide receiver 5, 6, and maybe even 7-roll.
Now, right now, there's a multitude of different projections going out there.
A projection from ESPN has CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flittaway, Kevontae Turpin,
Anthony Smith, and Marcos Valdez-Cantling. Six wide receivers. In terms of other predictions,
the number's a little less. In fact, just five wide receivers in this one. CeeDee Lamb,
George Pickens, Ryan Flittaway, Kevontae Turpin, and Trey Sean Holden making the roster. A guy who
there is a bad or a hard choice that they're going to have to come to the realization of.
Now, again, going back to what we're looking for with the wide receivers,
this is a lot of names. Obviously, Denzel Mims, a former collegiate athlete here in Texas at Baylor.
Jordan Hudson, also a collegiate athlete here in Texas at SMU. There is some names that they added
in late that you're thinking, well, do they add them in because they just need some extra
body space? No, they add them because they maybe not trust their wide receivers in the roster.
Now, here's the depth chart as it stands right now, and I want to know what you think and who
your wide receiver roster projections are down in the comments section. Who do you think the six,
four, five, how many wide receivers do you think the Cowboys keep? How many will it be? Who will
it be? Put it down in the comments section, your wide receiver roster projections in the comments
below. So, just to kind of go through this, in my mind, the Cowboys are going to keep six wide
receivers. That's a decent amount. The question is five and six. CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens,
Ryan Flittaway, Kevontae Turpin. Locks for me. Locks. They're going to be on the roster.
That fifth and sixth spot, does it go to Anthony Smith and Marcos Valdez-Gantling?
Do they cut Jonathan Mingo, a guy we haven't talked about that much?
There is some tough decisions. Treshawn Holm, a guy everybody liked last year as a UDFA,
stayed on the practice squad. Would he be on the practice squad again this year? Should he be cut?
Let's go through the stats and kind of go through it. So, Anthony Smith is the first guy I want to
talk to because I think he's a good lock to be that number five or six. I think he's got
probably the next best odds behind Kevontae Turpin to land on this roster. It's a large part because
of what he's able to do with the deep ball. Average yards per reception of 17.8 in his
collegiate career. And over the past two seasons, it was 19.5 and 16.5 in which he accumulated
13 touchdowns of his 16 in his collegiate career. Anthony Smith is a guy who can play that Marcos
Valdez-Gantling role and be at a point where you're not going to pay him as much as you
would for MVS. MVS is an easy cut candidate. Unfortunately, he is only going to be making
$187,000 of the money in the cap space should you cut him. This is something that you can come in
here and really make. Now, Anthony Smith would have the more likelihood to be remaining on the
practice squad, but I think he gets the edge over Marcos Valdez-Gantling. That being said,
there's still a sixth spot if I do put Anthony Smith in the fifth spot. MVS is intriguing to me,
or rather, yeah, MVS, let's go there. He's a journeyman and has been playing in this league
for a while and has Super Bowl caliber under him. He's played for a multitude of different
Super Bowl teams, the Chiefs obviously being the most recent in 2023, but the Packers and the
Buffalo Bills, the Saints, the Niners, the Steelers. In his career, he's amassed over
3,600 yards and he averages also 16.8 yards in the NFL. Not in college, in the NFL, but he's also
been in the NFL since 2018. Entering the early 30s here for him, I don't see the benefit of keeping
him. When they originally signed MVS, the first thing I said was,
this might just be a warm body. This might just be a receiver with veteran instincts.
But then we got reports out of training camp and reports out of mandatory minicamp that
he was wide receiver three. Now, granted, George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb were not present for the
time that he was wide receiver three, but still, Anthony Smith was there. Denzel Mims, a couple
and yet he was getting the wide receiver three reps. Does that give us any insight into him
maybe being a bigger role? Potentially, but I think he's the most likely cut candidate right now.
Now, that being said, I do think they keep six. So, where does Jonathan Mingo go? Does he make
the roster? I don't know, because he's got to get past Trey Schott and hold. And Mingo has just been
a disappointment. I mean, since the day the Cowboys traded for him from Carolina, it's never
gone right. In his rookie season, 418 yards, no touchdowns, still hasn't had one in the NFL,
and a 9.7 average. Then slowed down his next year with just 12 receptions for 121 yards.
Then across the 2024 season, he was traded to the Cowboys and in the 2024 season,
he had traded to the Cowboys and only had 46 yards as well in those eight games.
Past year, six games, just one reception of five targets for 25 yards. As much as I want to say
he is a guy the Cowboys want to keep on this roster, it doesn't make sense anymore. It didn't
make sense last year in some right to keep him on the roster over guys like Trey Schott and hold.
I think at this point in time, there's better names. There's better names than Jonathan Mingo.
Heck, you want to go further. I think there's a shot that maybe Camden Brown, Jordan Smith,
Jaden Smith, one of those guys is better to keep on your roster than Jonathan Mingo.
It's not worth it anymore. The time that he's had on the field, he hasn't performed. The things
you've asked him to do, he hasn't done. I truly do think that it's the end of the line here for
Jonathan Mingo. But still the question is, who's the wide receivers that they're going to make?
If you're asking me, I told you at the beginning of the show, they're going to keep six.
I feel as though they're going to keep CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flannoy, Kevontae
Turpin, and they're going to go with Anthony Smith, and they're going to keep Trey Schott and
hold. And those will be the 53-man roster wide receivers. Obviously, practice squad is an option.
Maybe the practice squad is the reason that they keep Marquez Valdez-Scantling over Anthony Smith,
because they see Anthony Smith being able to join the practice squad more likely than Marquez
Valdez-Scantling. But this is an intriguing position to kind of figure out who those next
wide receivers are. Because again, hopefully injuries are not a problem. But injuries are
a part of the game, and knock on wood, we don't see them. You've got to prepare for them. You've
got to be ready for them. But the Cowboys, that wide receiver 6-7 mark, or rather 5-6,
could be used more than we think. But let me know what you think down in the comments section.
Again, put who you think your wide receiver roster projection will be, 1-6, 1-5, 1-7,
how many receivers are going to be on there, and who they will be. Put those down in the comments.
For now, guys, we appreciate you watching. We'll see you next time. Peace out.
