This is what Dan Wohlke had to say who covers the Lakers for the Athletic He wrote that the big men are in high demand this offseason in terms of just the big men market We saw what the Lakers had to give up to go get Walker Kessler Though availability remains slim as the offseason moves along more players could hit free agency after a buyout So there could perhaps be even more players that we see become free agents that we don't even know yet but one player that we do know is a Free agent and one name that keeps continuing to float around the Lakers is Suns big man Nick Richards who remains unsigned nearly a month into free agency, although he actually was less on the Bulls because he had traded to the Chicago Bulls at the deadline, but you know It was on the Suns earlier in the year and then Dan Wohlke writing that Richards is probably the biggest name here Thanks to his counting stats and experience as a part-time starter But his inability to consistently impact winning has kept teams from getting all that excited So what is the what would the Lakers be getting in somebody like a Nick Richards? So teams were getting very excited about him a couple of years ago with what he was doing with the Charlotte Hornets as this was Somebody who was getting a lot of rebounds seven and a half boards per game and he's been a very good rebounder throughout his career And has never really been more than just a backup big man Who could be a spot starter like Dan Wohlke alluded to but has been pretty solid. He's got good size Long arms not a bad rim protector either and somebody that could be a lob finisher He's not gonna really do a whole lot outside of just getting put backs and catching lobs in the paint He's not really much of a back-to-the-basket big He's not gonna generate a lot of offense But he can be that finishing type of big man and we know Luka Doncic does bring the best out of those types of players You don't need to do a whole lot, right? Just make yourself available and play above the rim set good screens and play hard. That is something that Nick Richards is Capable of doing we've seen him now Play for three different teams this year and it seems like the Chicago Bulls are probably not gonna resign him I feel like they would have done it by now. They had just traded for Nick Claxton this offseason They also have Jalen Smith on the roster, which who also could be a potential candidate to become a Laker Via a trade. Be sure to check it out if you haven't but In terms of Nick Richards He's more of the traditional type of big man that a Luka Doncic could perhaps bring the most out of and you know We'll bring a little bit of a different element that the Lakers currently don't have right now on this roster Especially behind Walker Kessler. So that brings us to our next point though Is this a situation where you buy cheap and get cheap, right? Is Nick Richards going to put you over the top? Well, the answer to that question is going to be no, right? Nick Richards is not going to be Unnecessarily a Type of player that's going to really elevate your room but he could be a nice complimentary piece if that's what you're looking for and it gives the Lakers and Rob Palenka's favorite word here is Optionality because right now Walker Kessler, he's locked in for 30 plus minutes a night You know You're getting out of him you paid him all that money and gave up all those draft picks for a reason Sandro Mamoukazvili, I feel like he's going to be their small ball five this year He can play the four he can play the five But J.J. Redick likes that five outlook the ability to switch everything and Mamoukazvili is a perfect player to play that position Kavon Looney can be a relief big man as well, but looking at Nick Richards He also brings something a bit different to the table that those guys necessarily don't I guess Kessler kind of does maybe just a lesser version of what Kessler does but he's a good rebounder and the Lakers have made it a priority to get guys that can rebound the basketball this summer as Mamoukazvili, Kessler and Kavon Looney All of them are good rebounders even great rebounders for a couple of those guys like Kessler and Looney And so Nick Richards can also be so in neck and crash the glass but the Lakers have had an opportunity to get him this offseason and they have not done it yet because they signed Kavon Looney over Nick Richards and They currently have 16 roster spots, which means they're gonna have to get rid of Two people in order to bring in Nick Richards That's what they're looking to do And if the Lakers do end up making some sort of moves here They do a signed trade for Kamingo They trade for a wing or something like that and they open up a roster spot Then you could see an opportunity for someone like Nick Richards to come in there Be signed and then be another relief backup big It probably would be for a vet minimum contract and I guess the idea would be if he signs his contract He's going to compete for an opportunity To get some good minutes and if Walker Kessler goes down He's probably the guy that would make the most sense to be the starter over someone like Mamu or someone like Kavon Looney and so while we still have a long way to go Towards NBA basketball and seeing the Lakers on the court. They'll start preseason in early October There is some basketball happening right now and I did promise you that we would make some picks through prize picks tonight and that is going to be in the WNBA as the women right now or in the thick of their season as Kayla McBride a guard for the Minnesota Lynx right now is Projected to have 17 and a half points in her Thursday night game here against Toronto so far She's averaged way more than that averaging 23.8 over her last five and in every single one of those games she has scored For the most part well above that 17 and a half point mark so that could potentially be a really smart pick just based on the trajectory and that nice little graph is Illustrating and another player here as well Camila Cardoza Cardozo, excuse me the center for the Chicago Sky. This is someone who's a highly decorated Collegiate athlete at South Carolina and has been a really good player here in the W right now She's projected to have 24 and a half points plus rebounds plus assists So again, it's not just 24 and a half points or rebounds or assists all of them combined She's projected to have and so far she has done that in three of the games has not done it in the last two though But she's still averaging right around that number here and going up against the Connecticut Son in this one on Thursday.
