In a Carpathian mountain village, a mother cooks for her five children on a wood-burning stove while their dad repairs the roof of the family home.

Svitlana and Dmytro are raising five children in Samakova, in the Carpathians. On this summer day, Dmytro works on the metal roof and carries firewood while Svitlana prepares two hearty dishes for the whole family.

She cooks a thick soup with smoked pork ribs, potatoes and grain, then makes traditional pork rolls — kruchenyky — filled with buckwheat, dried mushrooms, fried onions and cracklings. Between the work, the children have a water-gun fight with Dad, draw, explore the meadow and enjoy a simple summer day together. In the evening, all seven gather around the table.
