AI GeneratedResidents of the north end of Bridgeport, specifically on Savoy Street, are expressing outrage over chronic flooding that has plagued their neighborhood for over 50 years. Despite paying high taxes and reaching out to city officials, residents claim the city has failed to implement necessary drainage solutions, leaving homeowners to struggle with flooded basements during every storm.
Some residents in the north end of Bridgeport are absolutely fed up with their neighborhood constantly flooding during storms.
They want the city to do something about it.
News 12 Connecticut's Justin DeVelis reports.
Every time someone drives by we get a big giant wave hitting us.
Neighbors on Savoy Street are speaking out tonight after their street flooded again on Monday.
Everyone's basement gets flooded. The worst was two weeks ago and then again today.
Dale Foti was one of those neighbors.
We had water in our sinks down in the basement and I couldn't keep up.
I would take a bucket upstairs, run up and down and by the time I got downstairs it was filled up again.
She says the problem has been happening here for more than 50 years.
My parents bought the house 64 years ago. It's been happening all along.
The neighborhood is in between two hills.
Foti says the next street over doesn't have any storm drains plus a nearby brook overflows during rainstorms
causing her street to look more like a lake.
It's frightening because I have elderly parents and I take care of them full time.
We have a sub pump. It was working phenomenally until water started coming through the hatches by the fireplace.
Foti claims she spoke to the mayor a few years ago about the problem,
but for this particular story the city denied our repeated requests for comment.
Meantime, neighbors are left wondering if the problem will ever be fixed.
On a scale of 1 to 10, we're at an 11. Let's put it that way. We're furious.
Nothing's getting done. We've been here forever and we pay very high taxes here in Bridgeport.
You would think we live in a castle with a lot of land or something.
Our taxes are so high and all we're asking for is please help us stop this from happening.
In Bridgeport, I'm Justin DeVelis, News 12 Connecticut.
