UC Head Coach Scott Satterfield Fall Camp Day 1 Presser
Aug 5, 2026
No, I mean, I think for us it's coming out and number one playing hard.
I think that obviously you want to play hard and number two execute.
You know, I was disappointed in some of the stuff that we did today offensively.
I mean, we didn't finish plays.
I mean, you know, guys on the ground.
I mean, you know, just some stuff that's frustrating to me.
I thought, you know, very vanilla day one on both sides of the ball.
But I thought defense did solid today.
Had an interception there in the team period there at the end,
which is good to see for the defense.
You know, again, they were vanilla, so they didn't do a whole lot today.
It's either, you know, first day out here and first practice.
So, but I was a little disappointed in day one.
I mean, you know, good thing it was day one, right?
I mean, come out here tomorrow and get better.
Yeah, I mean, you know, that's a long ways before you play your first game.
You know, and so, again, we got a long ways to go.
We're just going to try to stack days.
I mean, we're going to try to, you know, get better tomorrow off this practice.
And, you know, always the first day,
I feel like everybody, the guys are a little bit –
the anxiety is a little bit higher the first day.
You know, get helmets on.
Are there areas where there's more competition than others?
I'm sure there is.
You know, but obviously we're going to compete at every position.
You know, but I think, you know, there's a couple guys that we know, you know,
that are going to be guys that are going to start.
You know, I think a lot of the competition is going to happen in the next guys.
Like who's coming in off the bench?
Like who's the twos?
Who's the threes?
How much depth can we create at all these positions?
I think D-line is the spot where there's a bunch of guys that are rotating right now.
So, let's try to find, you know, who are those seven guys, eight guys
that they're going to be able to help us in the fall.
I do think Marquez Parker has had a really good summer.
He's kind of stood out up front there.
You know, Thomas Brown, I think another one that's done really good.
I mean, after that, to me it's like, all right, well who's the next guy?
You know, we're going to have a lot of rotation right there.
So, we'll see how those guys compete.
Tracy is new to you, but he's got 26 college starts.
How does that show up?
Yeah, I mean, I think it shows up in his poise.
You know, I think he's real calm when he's out in the field.
It's chaotic, hectic, a lot of things going on, and it doesn't bother him.
You know, I think, you know, I really like how his poise is
and his demeanor and how he goes out and plays.
And, you know, I thought he had some good snaps today, some good passes,
you know, some good completions, good decisions.
And for him, that's what it's going to come down to.
When you have a day where you are disappointed in what you saw,
how do you go about, A, addressing that in team meetings to follow
and then, B, making sure that it turns around to follow again?
Yeah, I mean, you know, I mentioned it in front of the team.
Like, you know, I don't say a whole lot to our team, but when I do speak,
I mean, everybody's like, you know, we better pay attention to this right here.
So, that will be addressed from our position coaches down to the players
and the leaders of the team.
You know, but you have to finish playing.
I mean, there's no other thing that we can do other than finish playing.
So, we'll do that.
There's no question about that.
So, we'll address it.
We have a bunch of meetings today, you know,
and then watching film and then being able to come back tomorrow.
We'll see how they react to it.
Why is this defense going to be better?
Yeah, I think many reasons, but I do think it's a multiple defense.
We're doing a lot of different things defensively.
We'll be able to bring pressure from all over the field, every position.
You know, it's a sound defense as well.
So, we're going to present a lot of different looks to the offense,
but you're also going to be sounding what you're doing,
and these guys will chase the ball.
That's non-negotiable.
They won't play if they don't chase the ball.
So, I think for those three reasons, it's going to be a better defense.
Aside from three returning starters, what makes this O-line so special?
Yeah, I think, you know, as an offensive line,
you always talk about five playing as one, so they have to play together.
They're a tight group.
They really understand each other, I think, and the communication is, you know,
obviously you've got to be verbal,
but there's a lot of the communication is just hand signals.
They just know because they've played together so long, I feel like.
They've had a lot of good work together, and they're confident in their ability.
You know, on top of that, they're nasty.
They get after it.
They're physical.
And what you want is an offensive line.
But, you know, but again, it's day one.
We've got some things we've got to get better up front.
They'll continue to get better, and Coach Carwell is going to push them.
How does it feel opening up camp here as opposed to being at higher ground?
Yeah, I mean, you know, this is where our guys have trained all summer
in Nippert and in our facility.
So, for the guys, it's not anything different, you know.
I think certainly for sentimental reasons, you know,
we miss being out there and the camaraderie that we have with the guys.
You know, but I think wherever we put the ball down,
these guys are going to perform.
They're going to play.
They're going to work hard.
So, I think, you know, we're going to make the best of this year
and make the best of our new facility.
Kano is behind two first-round draft picks at Notre Dame.
Can you sense how excited he is to get an opportunity?
Yeah, I mean, certainly.
You know, obviously Notre Dame is a great program, and he was there,
and he sat behind two first-round draft picks,
and that's a good example of what it takes to get there,
and that's obviously where he wants to get to.
I think he's had a really good summer.
He's excited to go out and perform, excited to go out and play.
You know, probably the last time he's had over ten carries
was back in high school, you know.
So, for him to come out here and try to perform at this level, it's exciting.
I mean, he wants to prove that he belongs,
and I think he does that every single day.
Last one.
I think so.
You know, we've got more size out there as well.
So, you know, excited about how those guys are playing right now.
I mean, obviously, we've got to continue and stack the days
and perform at a high level.
But it's going to take a bunch of guys there at that position, too.
We talk about depth.
I mean, you're right.
We do have more depth there.
We have guys we feel like we can rotate and play,
and we've got some experience.
We've brought some guys in with experience,
and they're playing a lot of football, and I think we're going to be better there.
I mean, there's no question about it.
We're going to be better at that position,
and they should be able to create some more havoc out there,
and hopefully they'll get some interceptions this year.
