Dr. Jin Duanyang explains how acupuncture treats physical pain and suppressed emotions by manipulating the body's energetic circuits. By bridging traditional Chinese medicine with modern neuroscience and mitochondrial function, he argues that acupuncture is a precise medical intervention that addresses the interconnected nature of physical and emotional health.
After more than 30 years of practice, I can tell you very clearly, acupuncture activates
emotions that have been hidden, suppressed, or blocked, sometimes for decades.
It does not matter whether the emotion is happiness, anger, worry, fear, or grief.
If it is trapped in the body, the right needles in the right place can bring it to the surface.
Today, I want to explain how this actually works, and why this concept, which sounds
mystical to so many people, is completely consistent with modern science, once you understand
what we mean by the word energy.
I'm Dr. Jin Duanyang, I'm a board-certified psychiatrist and fifth-generation classic
Chinese medicine practitioner.
In classic Chinese medicine, every organ system is paired with an energetic channel, which
we call meridian, and each of those channels is connected to specific emotional patterns.
The liver and gallbladder system governs anger, resentment, frustration, disappointment, and
depression, and a particular kind of depression that sits right on top of bottled-up frustration.
The heart and small intestine system governs joy and when disturbed, anxiety, insomnia,
feeling vulnerable, confused, and lost.
The spleen and stomach system governs overthinking and worry.
The lung and large intestine system governs grief, sadness, and loss.
The kidney and bladder system governs fear, dreadfulness, and bad memory.
This is not a metaphor.
The modern neuroscience is beginning to map how different organ systems project back to
different regions of the brain, the insular cortex, the amygdala, the prefrontal cortex,
the very regions that regulate those same emotions.
So, when a needle is placed along a specific channel, we're not just treating a muscle
or a nerve.
We're accessing the organ system, the brain region, and the emotion that has been living
in that circuit.
Now, here's the first thing most people get wrong about acupuncture, including a lot of
people who practice it.
When we place needles, we're not simply stimulating one point.
A single needle by itself does not do the real work, unless it was specifically for
pain in certain circumstances.
What we're actually doing is closer to the strategic deployment of an army.
Every needle has a position.
Every needle has a role.
Every needle has a relationship to every other needle on the body.
Together, they form a pattern, a coordinated formation.
And that pattern creates energetic circuits, a circuit with a positive pole and a negative
pole, drawing young meridians on one side and young meridians on the other, which in
classic Chinese medicine carry opposite polarity.
Once the circuit is closed, energy begins to move.
It circulates.
It flows toward the blockage, around the blockage, through the blockage, and eventually
dissolves it.
That circulation is the mechanism, not one point, not a trigger, a moving current engineered
by the pattern.
This is why two acupuncturists can put needles in roughly the same area and get completely
different results.
One knows how to compose the circuit.
The other is just placing needles.
And this is also why acupuncture can address such a wide range of conditions, because once
you know how to design the circuit, you're working with the body's entire energetic
infrastructure.
Let me tell you about one patient.
He was a highly successful executive.
He came to me because he had developed severe lower back and sciatic pain.
He could not walk even one block.
His history was complicated.
Prostate cancer that had metastasized to the spine.
He has gone through radiation.
He refused surgery.
He refused pain medications because they made him foggy-headed, and he could not run his
company that way.
He did not believe in acupuncture, but at that point, he had no other option.
We did a thorough evaluation.
In Chinese medicine, we do not only ask about the pain.
We ask about your life.
What are you carrying?
What are you angry about?
What have you been swallowing for years?
His pain was running right down the gallbladder channel, the lateral side of the side and
leg.
Classic sciatic distribution.
And when we talked, the story came out.
There was a deep pattern of frustration and suppressed anger.
Years of it stored in exactly the channel where the pain was now showing up.
We treated him twice a week for several weeks.
His pain improved dramatically.
And then one day, he looked at me and said,
Dr. Yang, is it possible that your acupuncture has made my mood better?
I said, why do you ask?
She said, my wife, you know, he likes to change our plan at last minute.
Yesterday, she wanted to cancel our flight and take the train instead.
Normally, I would have been screaming at her.
Instead, I just said, okay.
And I surprised myself.
I was not angry.
I said, do you remember our first conversation?
We identified that anger, resentment and frustration you have been carrying for years.
What energetical cause of blockage along your gallbladder channels?
That blockage was producing the pain.
And it is very hard for me to remove that blocked energy without also releasing the
anger that was creating the block in the first place.
He got both the pain relief and emotional freedom.
They are not two different things.
They are one thing.
Let me pause here because there is something else most people get wrong about Chinese medicine,
including most of the textbooks.
The standard story is that Chinese medicine is simply the product of several thousand
years of trial and error clinical observation.
This is the part of the truth, but it is not the whole truth.
In my tradition, it is that Chinese medicine inherited much of its foundational knowledge
from a far older civilization, a prehistorical civilization that had the capacity to directly
perceive and visualize energy in the human body.
They have some kind of capacity to see it.
That's why when you look at the classical texts, the meridian map, the acupoint system,
the organ-emotion correspondences, all of the rites in our tradition already remarkably
complete.
It was not assembled piece by piece by guesswork.
It was handed down.
Now, here is the humbling part.
Today, we still do not have instruments that can see what they saw.
All current imaging, MRI, functional MRI, PET scans can visualize anatomy and metabolism,
but they cannot visualize the energy itself.
To truly see what ancients saw, modern medicine will need something beyond conventional imaging.
We may need quantum imaging, and in my view, even beyond quantum, because quantum scale
is not the smallest scale in the universe.
Until then, we are working with an inherited map that is more sophisticated than the instruments.
We have to verify it.
Which is exactly why thoughtful physicians should take this medicine seriously.
Not because it is old, but because its resolution is finer than ours.
Now I know, for many people trained in western science, the word energy sounds vague, almost
mystical.
I understand skepticism.
So let me give you the scientific translation.
When classic Chinese medicine talks about qi, about energy, we are talking about something
very real and very measurable in modern terms.
The energy that moves through your body is, in modern biological terms, two things working
together.
First, it is electrical and neurophysiological activity of your nerve system.
The firing of neurons, signals traveling along your peripheral nerve, the electromagnetic
fields generated by your heart, your brain, every cell membrane.
These are real, measurable, documented phenomena.
That is energy.
Second, and even more fundamentally, it is the energy produced inside every cell of your
body by a tiny organelle called the mitochondria.
Your mitochondria take the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats you eat, along with the
oxygen you breathe, and they run them through a metabolical cycle, the Krebs cycle, the
electron transport chain, and produce ATP.
ATP is the actual chemical energy currency of every cell in your body.
Every muscle contraction, every heartbeat, every thought, every emotion.
All of it runs on ATP.
When we talk about energy flow, what we are really talking about is production of ATP,
the transmission of electrical signals, the flow of blood, lymph, and interstitial fluid,
all of which depend on the energy your mitochondria are generating.
When a channel is blocked, when Qi is stagnant, what is actually happening at the physiological
level?
You have regional inflammation, you have impaired mitochondrial function, you have
reduced microcirculation, you have altered autonomic tone.
All of that is measurable.
All of that is real.
Now here's the catch.
Every time your mitochondria produce energy, they also produce byproducts, reactive oxygen
species, free radicals.
A small amount is normal and even useful.
It plays a role in cellular signaling.
Once the production of this reactive species exceeds your body's ability to clear them,
you enter a state called oxidative stress.
And oxidative stress damages your DNA, it damages your mitochondria themselves, it damages
your cell membrane, it damages your tissues.
This is the upstream driver of aging, of chronic disease, of cancer, of neurodegenerations,
of the low-grade inflammation that show up as pain, fatigue, brain fog, and mood disorders.
This is why we need antioxidants from our food, the colors in vegetables and fruits
are not there for decorations.
They are antioxidant compounds your body uses to neutralize these free radicals.
But in the modern world, we are producing oxidative stress faster than we can clear
it.
Because of processed food, because of environmental toxins, because of chronic stress, and because
of suppressed emotions sitting in our channels, quietly producing low-grade inflammation year
after year.
This is why we use everything we can to counteract it.
Diet, lifestyle, exercise, meditation, and neurotherapies like molecular hydrogen, which
is one of the most targeted antioxidants we have access to.
Hydrogen selectively neutralizes most damaging free radicals without disrupting the useful
ones.
I will dedicate a full episode to molecular hydrogen soon because it deserves its own
conversation.
A coordinated circuit of needles, in-pull, young-pull, closed-loop, generate a flow of
energy through channels that correspond to specific organ systems and specific brain
regions.
That flow restored microcirculation, modulated autonomic tone, normalized mitochondrial function
in the tissue, reduced local and system inflammation, and shifted activity in the brain circuits
connected to those organs.
And when those circuits have been holding suppressed emotion, anger in the liver channel,
grief in the lung channel, fear in the kidney channel, releasing the physical block also
released emotion, sometimes in tears, sometimes in a smile, sometimes, like my executive patients,
in the quiet discovery that you are no longer reactive in the situation that they used to
trigger you.
This is what we mean by the energetic dimension of health.
In our ACES framework, Anatomy, Chemistry, Energy, Spirit, the energetic dimension is
a layer that conventional medicine has largely ignored for the past hundred years.
But it is the dimensions that govern your nervous system, your mitochondria, your emotional
regulation, and your organ system actually talks to each other.
If you only treat the anatomy with surgery, with physical therapy, you miss it.
If you only treat the chemistry with medications, with supplements, you still miss it.
You have to treat the energy.
And that is what acupuncture does.
Let me come back one more time to that word, placebo.
Because there's something here most skeptics miss.
The placebo effects has a very specific mechanism.
It requires belief.
It requires expectation.
It requires strong suggestion that something is going to work.
That is how placebo operates.
Now consider what actually happens in my clinic.
The majority of patients who come to see me do not believe in Chinese medicine when they
walk in.
They come because everything else has failed.
That is the only reason they are in the room.
And most acupuncturists, especially in the United States, are now trained and are not
in the business of installing strong belief in their patients.
That is not how they were educated.
Most of them simply diagnose patients and place needles.
So to practitioners for placebo response, belief, expectation, strong suggestion are
absent.
In fact, if anything, what you would predict from modern psychology is the opposite.
Given the patient's skepticism, you would expect a nocebo effect.
Belief-driven underperformance.
You would expect the treatment to do less than it objectively does.
And yet, the results come anyway.
The pain resolves.
The emotion releases.
So the next time someone dismisses all of this as placebo, ask them a simple question.
Whose belief is producing the effect?
Because the patients walked in skeptical and walked out better.
That is not placebo.
That is medicine.
You're looking at a 3,000 years old medicine that understood the link between emotion,
organ function, and energy long before we had scientific tools to measure it.
And now that we do have those tools, what we are finding again and again is that the
ancient physicians were right.
If you have been carrying pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, or chronic illness that has not
responded to conventional treatment, ask yourself whether your energetic dimension has ever
been properly addressed.
Because until it is, you are only getting part of the medicine.
Three things before I let you go.
First, I want to invite you into something we just launched.
It is called ACE's Circle, our members community built around the four-dimensional
framework.
For $99 a month, you get a full library of four-dimensional health teachings, live Q&A
sessions with me, and a community of people who are done with fragmented medicine and
want the whole picture.
Second, if you or someone you love is facing a complex, stubborn condition that is not
responding to conventional care, we offer ACE's Evaluations, a deep, four-dimensional
workout that looks at anatomy, chemistry, energy, and spirit in one integrated assessment.
Link below.
Third, if you're a clinician, a physician, an acupuncturist, a nurse practitioner, anyone
doing this work, and you want to bring four-dimensional medicine into your own practice, there is
a professional track opening up inside ACE's Circle with training, certification, and a
clinical community.
Link below as well.
