It's another
Oh
Hello and welcome to another
Player profile and projection here on talking yanks brought to you by seat geek code yanks
Get you some cool stuff carlos rodan
Now this is a player jake that has never been part of a ppp before it's his first ppp
Do you think he feels good about that? I think he doesn't care
From what we've heard. He probably doesn't care
Um, maybe he will maybe he's a tune-in. Maybe he's you know, because he's he's done some content type stuff
Maybe he's in
Like we know cashman's a big podcast guy. Like maybe rodan's gonna be like, what's the yankee? Oh talking yanks. Okay
Oh, these guys are hot
um
Jim he's listed 6 3 2 45. Are you into that?
6 3 2 45. No, I mean but not like it's it's there
Which do you think he's lying more about his height or his weight?
His weight's just wrong. Yeah, he's not lying about it. He's just not caring to change it
Oh, yeah, like he's never looked. Yeah. Yeah, he can't tell you like the last time he's actively stood on a scale
Well carlos, thank you for tuning in
Sorry, we started here a new pitcher on the yankees. That's kind of what you're alluding to jimmy six years
162
Yep, six year contract
162 million dollars including a five million dollar signing bonus. Nice
So he's the new
Number two that money around for a while
Nestor's got a fighting chance there, but I mean I think uh,
You pay this guy that much money he's gonna get a lot of shots he's supposed to come in and be a guy
I know we're going to talk about rodan, but my first question that I just thought of yes
Who's the last guy the yankees signed like this? I mean garrett cole came in to be a number one
This is a six-year deal when have the yankees had two starting pitchers of this caliber locked up for this long together
It's been a while since the like the yankees have kind of only done garrett cole level signings or one year
This is things and free has to be the most in talking to yanks since 2017 since we've been doing it
I think I remember dirt like during rodan's free agency
We were I was reading articles and it's like the only other like multi-year free agent pitcher signing was hap
And that was there's some other two years, right? There's a
Yeah, there's a vesting option on the third, but yeah
So it's it's new it's new for the yankees in this you have to go back
I think to like when messina and pettit
And that crop of pitchers or was there someone that overlapped with cc corota was like two-year deals
Burnett signed same off season. That was a five-year deal kind of okay to be that
Yeah, that was supposed to be that but this that's a while ago. I mean, it's a long time since that I
Corota was like three different one-year deals. Yeah, because he didn't like baseball hated baseball
It's just what he was good at just happened to be really good at it. Yeah
Um, yeah, and jim, I don't you know, it's a little bit internet offseason kerfuffle time as we're recording this
MLB network came out with their top 10 list of pitchers and they had rodan at three
So
Maybe he's the one maybe cole's the two mlb. Yeah top 10 pitchers in mlb. Yeah
Great news who made the list
Did they say stuff or they're just like a graphic the graphic yeah
Burns verlander rodan automation. They're one two three
Burns verlander rodan, okay
Cole wasn't on the top 10
Oh and before

The reasons that someone was allowed to do that graphic is the last two years carlos rodan
Two three seven era for the chicago white socks over 132 innings
It was his first year back in a while. He'd had some injury history, uh shoulder stuff, which makes you nervous
for any pitcher shoulders and elbows, obviously
but
He goes out the next year the san francisco giants a 288 31 start so we went from 24 to 31
132 innings to 178. He led the national league in fit field fielding independent pitching
some people like
Well, which was the fastball slider combo is as good as anyone in baseball. Yeah, and his fit was good, which was
Important for him because the giants sucked at infield defense last year. Yes
They were not good
Yeah, he's got very basic pitch mix
61 percent of the time he's gonna throw a four seam fastball
Uh at like what's the velo on it's not crazy, right?
So it's ticked up. I think he sits 95 and a half 95. Yeah, that's pretty good for a lefty
And if I remember correctly and we're gonna watch him a lot and we're gonna learn who this guy is
I think something we may come to learn to love is I think he has the
He can dial it up
Like I think we're this is what i'm assuming right now. I think he sits
94 95
But when there's a big moment in a game, he reaches back for the 97 98. Yeah
Um, so that's something i'm excited to find out this year
Yep, and then the slider is his second most pitch to righties
He uses it
You know, there's pretty decent separation. It's 30 percent of the time
Uh to lefties he actually bumps the slider up so the lefty on lefty slider that's going to be a four or 38 percent of the
time
Basic you're not looking at a crafty guy here
You're not looking at cole who's got four plus pitches or nester who was a two pitch pitcher at one point last year
But also uses so many timing mechanisms and just like attitude to basically win him some at bats
Which I do think rodon does as well. He's kind of like a gutsy. Uh
Gamer of a pitcher. Oh, yeah, the pitch makes it straightforward. Here's my four-seam fastball. Here's my slider try to hit it
You won't do you think the yankees will do?
Do anything with that? We know how much they love the gas station the lab
do we think we at some point we see rodon like trying to cut her like
You know that
Andy if we're doing lefties in yankee history, which that's what this show is lefty yankees history
cc pettit
The cutter especially as they got older
And they're gonna welcome rodon in with so at some point carlos rodon's gonna throw a cutter. It's just wet
I don't know about cutter
But I liked it. I like it. I like it
I like that in year four year four of his contract not in year one, right?
When the velo's ticking down a little bit you add that like we saw cc and pettit really master cutter on the wrist
Yes, I like that a lot. He's got a lot of people in new york to help him with that, right?
So just wait, okay the curveball had good, uh underlying metrics last year
So the curveball threw more to righties and lefties, but all its slash line was really good
Um, it it's whiff and put away weren't terrible
But he didn't give up like he gave up one hit off of it
now he didn't throw it a lot at all and i'm wondering maybe if
They try to work on that more in spring just in case one of the pitches the slider you get a different feel for
If they try to I don't know if he's throwing that whirly slider, right?
And that's what everyone kind of likes now if they try to change that
Usually you give a guy this much money. You're not looking to change him
it's usually when you trade for a guy you're looking to like
Get value on the margins because you think you can like improve him by a drastic measure
Like we've seen the yankees do a lot. So I don't know. I think we're gonna you know
Especially year one coming over. I think he's gonna do what he's done
yeah, and
You should be really excited about it. Um, I I think
like we've heard
Off the field and we talked about with the scale. He kind of has
idgaf vibes
I don't give a bleep. I dug a oh
That throwing fastball and slider 95 of the pitches
I think that's kind of his attitude like here it is
Try to beat me. I I think something else we always look for for new yankee pitchers is
Uh, you know for him it'll be fastballs away to righties, you know power hitters and the short porch
You know playing at oracle pretty pitcher friendly place yankee stadium
also
Three quarters of the field is pitcher friendly
But there's a quarter of the field that is not pitcher friendly that he might have to learn that we've seen
You've your guy lance lynn talked about it. We see a lot of pitchers
You have to learn how to pitch to the confines of yankee stadium a little bit
But once you do if you can have guys hit balls to left center field
Joe, dimaggio would have had 600 homers
That's what I heard this morning on the streets
You're always hearing good stuff. Yeah po bagel shop
The pitch in the yankee stadium is a thing that's gonna happen
He's gonna face a lot of righties and yeah, uh lance lynn is a righty when he talked about that, you know
You can't let the ball be away to righties because they can actually flick it take advantage of the short
Short porch even more than lefties can so
Someone tell him that right first. I was gonna bring up like his pitches last year like
So he throws his fastball and the batter is a righty like what quadrant is he?
Is he throwing that too a lot?
And i'll let you know when I find it
It's coming soon. Yeah
uh
I'm excited for rodan
Like I just if you watch him pitch go watch some highlights like
He's kind of like stomping on the mound a little bit
Like he's kind of like a nail biter energy like just like recently quit cigarettes energy on the mound
Which I like a little bit antsy a little bit like get me off this ******* mound, which I I do appreciate
I don't want to be here. I don't want to be here
Like I want to go back in the dugout and uh, you know, fill my mouth with dip or whatever it is
Which nester has that energy as well?
And we think him and nester are going to be boys right they're both kind of
florida kids
So I I'm miami. Yeah, but then rodan moved up to north carolina
We we did some of this before but it seems like he should be friends with nester
Everyone has to be friends with cole
But it's kind of like a four-man team like the rest of the rotation has to do shifts on that because it's intense
And higgie obviously I have I believe his dad's from cuba. So travel like that
Okay, I have bad news now oracle park
Right field where he played big wall big wall deep
Brendan beltwood had way more home runs if he wasn't playing for the giants. You sound like the guy I saw this morning
Yeah maggio
You just talked about high and away fastball strides. That's where carlos rodan lived last year. Okay, so the most amount of pitch the most
Amount of pitches in a single location was high and away to righties with his four seam
So, yeah that might get him maybe he overcomes it and that's fine
but that is a recipe for just like
Having that that void that dj even judge like oppo
Right homer that we we've seen a lot
dj
Remember when he used to find the short porch? Yep. He'll get back. They're going to worry about it. He was hurt
Um, yeah, I mean hey, you know analytics guy here
If he could aim for the top
That part of the strike zone he maybe he could just bring that in and jam the righties sure I like it
um, and how about this, you know, this is where
profile and projections
Really stand out compared to other network shows. Yeah
Maybe he's hit by pitches going because he tries to get in on righties more
So watch out for that bank on that see
Bank on that. Uh, he had the sixth highest fly ball rate in 2022
among qualified pitchers
30 and and yeah, that might not be as favorable in yankee stadium as others
like i'm sure if I look at a spray chart, we're not gonna like that, but
Uh, maybe he was scared of his defense over the infield defense was horrible pitch to your stadium. Yeah
He'll be great at fenway then
That's huge
He will be he might love that. He seems like he has a hey, this is kind of a genuine thing
I know we're being a little goofing and gaffing. Yeah, I wasn't doing any gaffes
feels like a person who would be
Good at fenway
It does and that's great because cole isn't
Cole kind of overthinks it
Do you think that he's gonna we talked about him having a nice fun relationship with nester?
Do you think he's gonna give cole a good energy? Like does he like talking about pitching?
I think it's going to be
Well, here's the best case, right?
I think it's good for both of them
cole is going to respect his like
a fastball slider
like that's
Yeah, that that's what works
and I think rodon will appreciate a little bit of like
Cole being like well, I threw in the first step bat
I I did throw him one change up. So when we play them next week
I'll start them off with a fastball and rodon's like what?
You're thinking
Two starts away
And I hope it's like a little buddy cop thing like
The thinker is an appreciation
Rodon
What we don't know
Gonna have to come to the office and I know this is rodon's ppp, but i'm just worried about
cole
Higgies going the world baseball classic like who's cole gonna talk to and annoy. I don't think rodon's gonna
No be an ear
at all
Found work vet's role
Oh my goodness rodon verse devers two for eight two singles
Okay
I was looking at his pitch. I was looking at his pitch log last year his game log
Which I like looking at when I want to judge a starting pitcher more than the total numbers like game in game out
How was it?
31 starts in 20 of those he pitched into the sixth inning
um
in
27 of the 31 he threw 90 or more pitches. So that's good. And I wonder how many of those were early
uh
Yeah, he didn't know he just went man and that was the thing that they were worried about with him a little bit
an injury
Injury prone and also hadn't accrued like 30 starts and and 100 whatever it is, uh innings last year
31 starts 178 innings pitched
One real blunder of a game i'd love for you to butter knife this
Straight out and tell me what his line is. Oh, wow
Yeah, one one game against the cardinals 3.2 innings pitch 10 hits eight earned runs
butter knife that out
And tell me what happens. I've got one baby step before the butter knife because you know, we talked about
Rodan, you know being a true two and how many times have the yankees had that?
um
And just you know
This is a loose jakey metric, but you talked about the innings or the pitches garrett cole eclipsed 100 pitches 19 times last year
or
Yeah, 99 pitches 19 times last year. How many 99s do you have?
Rodan did 98 17 times nice
So like you're talking about a guy who's out there like you're looking for the call have any 98s when we do a pregame show
You're looking at he had 198
No 99s
Cole didn't have any 99 99, but you said 99 is his number. Well because that was helping rodon
Okay rodon needed the night, but then you went back to 98
I know because I misread it because I got excited for the butter knife because I didn't have the butter knife
Do you want to give his like projected line for the year?
I'm gonna butter knife you go butter knife that and i'll do his projected baseball reference line, which
I mean mlb's got him as the best pitcher in the whole entire world. So I don't know what else you need about that
73% reliability is what we're working with that on baseball reference. They have them making
throwing
162
innings which is
About I don't know like 29 starts 30 starts
So down a little bit they have him
Let's see with a 306 era
Of course, he has one save
And a one dot whip
Um, dude. Yeah, I think i'd be okay with that
I think i'd be okay with that
Yes, three dot zero six i'd be okay with that. Yeah, obviously
Especially I think i'm giving him more wiggle room
uh during the regular season first year to figure out the league and the stadium
And all that and just be dialed come postseason because that's what we've needed for a while. It's like a legit two
Uh because to help
Cole out, uh take more innings and all that
During the the postseason so I I am going to give rodon and hold me to this everybody
If I start getting frustrated some wiggle room
Early in the year to figure out the stadium
Like I think he might have to run into some short porch holders and that's something that we don't really know his personality
Like severino, he has to fail to learn that we learned that a lot and cc sabathia talked about that
He's not just gonna believe you that you can't throw outside fastballs to righties as easily here
He has to like get beat before he's like, ah, okay, and I don't know if carlos runs like that or not
It's gonna be fun to find out. Uh, like you're saying. I mean he's gonna be here for the next six years
Probably something like that. Um, it seems like he's got a cool personality from what we've heard and what we've seen
Um, if you butter knife out one of his starts last year 3.2 eight earn runs easily his worst start
um
174.1 innings a two five three era
Two five three. Yeah, what's the line in that bad start?
3.28. Whoo. Yeah, and that was his only
You know, he had a he had a couple five earnies, but those were over like six innings five innings
So yeah, I mean it's it's the clear outlier
When when was that start? Can you give me the date may 15th at st. Louis?
So, you know
Okay, so he bumped up the slider a bunch may 15th
Fastball came down a little bit. I wonder what happened there
We'll ask him
He probably doesn't want to talk about that. Yeah. Hey, what can you tell us about your one bad start?
That would be a bad way to go
and he mentioned in his
After press conference chat with like curry he talked about tinkering with the change up a little bit
Is that the start he used it or something?
Uh, I don't believe so I just had it up I can find it in two seconds
No, um, he started he didn't use it at all true
He threw a couple curveballs. He started up in the curveball more after that start
um
Interesting pitch usage over the year for a chunk in june. How are his numbers in june?
Was that there was one month where he got hit pretty hard
Guessing it's may considering that game came in may
but his season splits because there was a bunch of games here in june that uh
He like kind of stopped throwing the four seam that much
He's got one game here. June 22nd, june
Overall may have been his best month. Wow
Depend what you what you value six starts one two five era
How is his june 26th innings as the most or june 28th july
June 28th six innings pitched one earned run against two
Against detroit so you didn't care. So what do you throw 90 fastballs 60 fastballs?
40 percent sliders didn't throw a single other pitch besides those two only start of the year where he didn't throw a third pitch
Detroit tigers. Yeah didn't need it shots fired a little that shots fired a little bit. He also was brain dead that game
Uh, i've got one last stat we do a little long, but this is one of the newer cool
Yeah, there's a lot to learn a lot to learn a little long. What if I told you?
of his 31 starts last year
24 of them were over
five innings pitched
And two earned runs or less
I like that 24 of his starts
I mean man, if you do that with the yankees, that's that's wins man. Yeah
That's exciting. He's a stud 24 starts. How many innings how many runs?
24 starts with five plus innings and two runs or less. I like that a lot
18 starts like half of his starts one run or less
That's nuts, man
I
Want that now he's in smaller ballparks and more offense
So we'll see how it goes. But yeah exciting. That's carlos rodon over under do we have one for him?
Let's see yankees ppp's
Um carlos rodon at one side young this year, no
um
I don't know if i'm seeing one
Don't see one
over under
Three two era
Under why not?
Nice, uh over under
one pick
Oh, i'd like one pickoff, he's a lefty right new rules, so
Is he picking people off? No, he's really bad at pickoffs. He's really bad at pickups really bad at the strikeout
I was reading that last. All right, how about over under?
0.5 balk subscribe
Oh, he's gonna ball. Okay, just for fun dude first first pitch just like a zone out. Okay. Yeah against detroit
Thanks guys. See ya
