____________________
An official definition for ultra-processed food is close to being finalized.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says this will make it easier to study how ultra-processed
foods affect health.
Kennedy also announced that a loophole allowing unchecked ingredients in our food is now being
closed.
KNDD correspondent Jason Blair reports.
We cannot spend our way out of a chronic disease epidemic while ignoring the things that are
making Americans sick.
Eat real food while avoiding ultra-processed food has been a basis for the Maha movement
and the new federal dietary guidelines.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says an official federal government definition of
ultra-processed food has been sent for final review.
Nearly 60 percent of American diet is made up of ultra-processed foods.
For our kids, it can be up to 70 percent.
Our bodies did not evolve consuming many of these substances.
He says having a clear definition will give researchers and policymakers a needed framework
to better understand what these foods are doing to our bodies, especially their role
in the chronic disease epidemic.
As we learn more and more about the role of ultra-processed food in triggering chronic
inflammation and the role of chronic inflammation in the chronic disease epidemic.
Kennedy also announces the closing of a decades-old loophole that has left the FDA without a full
picture of ingredients entering the food supply.
Industry hijacked the loophole and drove a convoy of chemical trucks through it straight
into the American food supply.
Dr. Masafarian of Tufts University says that companies were taking advantage of a 1958
law that allowed skipping FDA approval for food ingredients already widely known as safe,
such as salt or vinegar.
But over time, that exemption has become the loophole.
And the vast majority of substances have been submitted via that loophole without public
disclosure.
RFK Jr. also announced that for the first time, sales growth of real food outpaced ultra-processed
food by about 7 percent in the past year.
