with more rain on the way. Cleanup efforts continue across the area
hindered by these extra rounds, of course. But Tuesday's devastating
storm still on our minds. Yeah, that goes for Northwest Indiana as well. A
lot of people there still don't have power. Casey Curtis is live in Munster
with the National Guard showed up this morning, Casey. Hi, Terrence and Anita.
That's right. 30 National Guard members are here in Munster and another 30 in
Hobart and here at 35th and Linden. It is a busy block today. Those guard
members are working to help folks clear down trees and debris from streets
like this one earlier today. Neighbors tell us this street was still
impassable. Boots on the ground arrived this morning within hours of Indiana
Governor Mike Braun declaring a statewide disaster emergency. The 113th
Engineer Battalion was in the middle of its annual two week training at Camp
Atterbury, just south of Indianapolis. When the call for help came in here in
Munster, guardsmen are using heavy equipment and chainsaws to clear some
of the hardest hit neighborhoods, lending a hand to community members
who experienced the worst of Tuesday's storm. Residents near 35th and Linden
say so many trees came crashing down, cutting off access to garages and front
doors. Some people on the block were trapped in their homes until help
arrived. And until earlier today, massive trees were still in the middle
of the road. My wife's from Munster originally, and so we moved into
neighborhood like neighborhood because of the trees. And then on Tuesday,
obviously the storm hit my I was at work at Tony's Pizza in Beecher,
Illinois, and I came home because my wife said two trees came on the house.
And so I rushed home to what you see behind us and just kind of working
through to get it cleaned up. Everybody in the neighborhood kind of helping
each other out. So the goal today is to clear the right of way to allow both
utility reconnection as well as road access so that everybody can get their
utility services back on, get into their driveways. Our mission is always
about Hoosiers helping Hoosiers, so we're always ready any time, anywhere
to answer the call whenever it's necessary. And here in northwest
Indiana, there are still about 230,000 Nipsco customers waiting for the
lights to come back on. Officials with the company say this marks the loud
largest outage on record here in northwest Indiana. Live in Munster,
Casey Cronus, Fox Chicago.
