First off, I want to thank Oral, Dana, the Hollywood Walk of Fame committee. You guys
got it right. This man, it's hard to kind of follow up the previous speakers but
everyone nailed their thoughts on Oral and you know it's a man of character and
Oral, you passed the test of time my friend. And you know I was thinking about
this about a week ago when I got asked for this great honor to speak on behalf
of Oral Hershiser for the Walk of Fame and you think about this undersized
pitcher, scrawny, didn't throw hard, didn't have the Hollywood jawline, might
have the Hollywood hair but I see a synergy, a parallel and to people that
come from all walks of life, all parts of the world and country, no one knows who
they are and they come to Los Angeles to bet on themselves and here you are as a
guy who was always the underdog, always the underdog and then you fast forward to
getting drafted late by the Dodgers, making his way through the minors and
his manager, the late great Tommy Lasorda, sees somebody, sees something in this
person, not player, this person that he can tap into and what did he do? He went
from being an underdog to becoming the Bulldog. And the thing that people don't
realize is yes, today he is now the newest member of the Hollywood Walk of
Fame but this didn't happen overnight. This came about by people believing in
him, which happens when people come to Hollywood, by most importantly him
believing in himself and betting on himself consistently and as a
byproduct, there's not a person here that has any interaction with Oral that can't
say that he was a great teammate and he made them better and so Oral, with that I
tip my cap to you and as I do this job which is the greatest job in the world,
to be the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, quick story, we've had
some tough losses as you guys all know, but the interesting thing and I'll give
you a peek behind the curtain, when we have these tough losses, my phone is dead
silent. When we have these big wins, my phone is blowing up, right? But when we have
these tough losses, my phone is dead silent, like I've got no friends, I've got
a wife and two kids, that's about it. And I've also got Oral Hershizer, so when
things are going well, when the winds at our backs, I don't hear from Oral, but
when the wind is in my face and the organization's face, the one of few
people that texts me outside of family is Oral Hershizer and he says, Doc, it's
gonna be okay. So give it up for Oral right there. And on the passing the test of time, kind of in
that vein, Oral now, he played an incredible major league career as a
ballplayer, obviously we've talked about his pinnacle moment in the World Series
in 1988, but he has parlayed that and how he treated the media, the fans, the
Dodgers organization into arguably a better career as a broadcaster and it's
going to be a longer career. And Oral, you guys have all allowed Oral into your
homes every night alongside Joe to tell a story and to tell the story of each
player, the Dodgers, and for him to have the love, the support speak to his
character and again the longevity on how he does things. And the last thing I say
as I'll close is you don't get to greatness by being selfish. You get
to being great and being honored by people and bigger things when you
don't make it about yourself. And one thing we try to preach in our clubhouse
is it's not about you, it's about your teammates and it's about the Dodgers. And
Oral, you nailed it man. You've always made life about other people and you
deserve all your flowers and congratulations.
