Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended after testing
positive for cocaine.
The former Wimbledon finalist confirmed the failed test himself and subsequently posted
an apology on Instagram.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency says Kyrgios tested positive for a metabolite
of cocaine.
The test took place at an ATP event in Mallorca back in June.
He's been banned from playing, coaching or attending any sanctioned tennis events
since August 4th.
Kyrgios released this statement.
He said and I'm quoting here, I made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for
it.
I'm not going to make excuses, but I do want to give some context about where I've been.
The last couple of years of injuries have taken a huge toll on me, both physically and
mentally.
At times I felt helpless and alone.
None of that excuses what I did.
The 31-year-old added he's stepping away from public life for about 28 days to focus on
getting himself right.
He also opened up on the toll of a long injury struggle, saying coming to terms with the
end of his career has been harder than he ever imagined.
Kyrgios has the right to appeal the suspension, but has not done so at this stage.
A tribunal will now decide the final outcome of his case.
Kyrgios has been plagued by injuries over the last four years, which has seen him play
only twice in the main draw of a Grand Slam since that run in 2022.
Kyrgios is currently ranked 919th in the world.
He was given a wild card to play doubles at Wimbledon last month and lost in the first
round with partner Alexander Bublik.
