Time now for sports. Argentine footballer Leandro Paredes has been handed a 10-game ban by FIFA for
his role in the post-match brawl at the World Cup final. The incident occurred in the immediate
aftermath of Spain's victory over Argentina in the World Cup final. Paredes was also fined $90,000
and he was one of several Argentinian players given suspensions and fines for the incident.
He will now miss at least 10 international games. FIFA's disciplinary committee
has also handed his teammate Nahuel Molina a seven-match suspension. Spain midfielder Gavi,
who was attacked by Paredes, will serve a one-match suspension and pay a fine of $30,000
for his part in the confrontation. Roberto Ayala, a member of Argentina's coaching staff,
has been given a three-match suspension. The decision comes almost a month after FIFA
appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the chaotic scenes of the final
whistle in New Jersey. That wasn't the only controversial incident during Argentina's World
Cup campaign. A number of financial penalties have also been imposed on the Argentinian Football
Association. The AFA has been fined $321,000 for breaches of the FIFA disciplinary code relating
to demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, team misconduct and discriminatory chants and gestures
by its supporters. After defeating England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final, several Argentinian
players held up a banner claiming Argentines' sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, a British
overseas territory. Argentina have also been ordered to play their next two home matches
with 50 per cent capacity, though one match of that sanction is suspended.
