Insane Astoria Salmon Fishing With James Moore | PNW Angler Series Pt. 3
Aug 31, 2026
Every angler has a story and here in the Pacific Northwest some of these stories are built through
years on the water, learning the rivers, chasing fish and turning a passion for fishing into a way
of life. Welcome back to the Pacific Northwest Angler Series. In part three we're spending the
day with James Moore of Moore Fishing. James has built a reputation through hard work,
time on the water and a genuine passion for putting people on fish.
Today we're getting to know the person behind Moore Fishing, where he came from,
what drives him and how he approaches fishing here in the Pacific Northwest.
This is James Moore, this is Moore Fishing. Welcome to Pacific Northwest Angler Series part three.
Sorry for the interruption.
He is here.
Rodney Knopp. We were ready. We got some secrets.
One for you, one for Rodney.
Do you know like you know the intrusive thoughts that just make me want to just boom?
Yeah, no, yeah, yeah.
Oh, hey guys.
What up dawg?
You gonna go fishing today?
I'm gonna try.
You made it.
I somehow made it.
Hey, he was on time.
Ready to go wreck em boys.
Hi, I'm James Moore with Moore Fishing. I've been guiding for three years
and it's been a wild ride.
It's my passion to share an experience with six new clients every day.
Always new faces and hearing the stories, the passion.
Kind of showing a day life of what can happen out here.
Gotta be careful.
They're running low on 18s everywhere.
This one might just go in the pocket.
I know what I'm supposed to be at.
Rodney plays by his own rules.
They're on it.
You're gonna get bit.
In your hand.
You're gonna get bit in your hand.
Oh my god.
You can see his tail and everything.
Yeah, he's gonna eat it.
Look at it, look at it.
Just look at it.
Oh, he's under the boat.
He's under the boat.
On that rod?
I'm just, I'm pre-pulling it.
He's in it?
He's in it.
So I'll be clearing boys.
You guys are gonna have to come back to me.
I am real.
I'm real.
Don't drop these, bro.
We're a hot mess over here.
Great work, boys.
A lot of work.
Look at that.
That was not coming out.
Buried.
Buoy 10 with the boys.
Hayden's on the board with a nice chrome bright Chinook.
Cheers, Hayden.
So I got into fishing.
It was kind of a crazy story.
I was in foster care growing up as a kid
and had some, you know, tribulations and tough times growing up.
And my foster mom, she got me a trout rod, a rooster tail.
And that kind of was my escape from all the reality of what was going on in my life.
When I was 15, I met my wife.
And it so happens to be her family owns STS, Salmon Trout Steelheader Magazine.
So growing up in the industry, having a lot of inspiration from Grandpa Frank, Tony,
Uncle Nick Amato, you know, being around some of these guys that have been in the industry
literally from the 60s.
And along the ride, I've got to fish with some greats.
You know, a lot of great people that are here and not here.
It drove the passion when I started going with these different guides that I was like,
man, this is what I want to do.
I got a question for you.
You ever thought of being like a Care Bear?
You'd be like Blair Bear, have a little heart on your chest?
That's what my grandma called me.
Oh, yeah.
I love your grandma.
Blacktail deer in your life?
Oh, yeah, dude.
I love blacktail.
Pull hard.
You gotta pull hard.
Oh my God, what are these?
Undo.
Sponsorship available.
Beside the sticker.
Dude, look at this guy over here.
You see that, dude?
That thing is crazy.
I don't think he's ready.
Oh, he's violent.
Oh, fight's going on, dude.
Those guys got one on.
Pop-Off just netted one.
We got one on.
Nice fish, John.
Craziest salmon I've caught down here.
Look at that.
Hey, is that Brandon Powers?
Says it on the side of his boat.
It is him, dude.
No way.
I saw you on, was it like Season 12, Episode 5?
No, it's fun.
I'll do you this service.
Season 5, Episode 4, MTV Catfish.
It was 11 years ago.
Do I have your autograph?
Yeah, yeah.
He's more famous than anyone around here.
You still got the contact?
Rodney's looking to make it big.
What's going on, Mr. Black?
We've killed two.
Farmer John killed a giant.
It's not full kill, but we were on a flurry
and then it now slowed down, but Powers just lost right next to me.
So a little update.
Honestly, for the start of the season,
it doesn't even feel like the first week of boot camp.
The fishing has been awesome.
People are going back to the barn early.
Everyone is catching fish.
Hopefully, it stays like this through the whole season,
but only time will tell.
Time for rapid fire questions from James Moore.
Energy drink.
Super bait.
Trolling.
Snook.
River.
Sunrise, baby.
Akumak Stroll.
GT.
Australia.
Spin to win, baby.
Keep your boat clean.
Mountain Dew, baby.
Holler at your boy.
There he went right there.
There's some fish around, boys.
I think we're gonna get, I think we're gonna get icy.
Oh, he's in strike zone.
Fish, fish, fish.
Reel this one, reel this one, reel this one.
Yep, yep.
Give you a real quick one.
Big old tank dog.
Cool dog.
Coolie.
Going back.
Brown is not down here, boys.
Brown goes out the boat.
Here, Marlin.
This is super cool.
100.
130.
140.
Everyone in, right?
Ripping.
Unpredictable.
Only a seven.
Two.
What is going on?
Holding you.
Oh, my.
Donkey.
That's what's going on.
Take that one.
I think we'll take that one.
Oh, my gosh, dude.
Look at the shoulders on that thing.
That's giant.
Is that a tuna?
What are we thinking, boys?
18.
Oh, no, that's actually 22 and a half.
18.
I'm going to say 21.2.
23.
Wow.
Didn't think it was going to be a 23 pounder.
Crazy.
There's definitely fish in this area.
Oh.
There he is.
Oh, you son of a.
Oh, god.
Dude.
He licked it.
Oh, he tasted the hoochie.
That one's good.
Right there.
There he is.
That was the obvious bite.
We're cranking.
He is cracking.
Oh, Cromer, dude.
Cromer, come back back here, broad dog.
That's a nice one, bud.
Come to me, dude.
Nickel.
Timer.
That is as dry as it gets.
He blew back.
He's trying to.
We haven't even bonked him yet.
He's still lively.
You know, that's what the epitome of stay frosty is.
That is just, it's blue.
Oh, there he is.
Background.
Got him.
Sean, get it.
Give me the.
Give me the camera.
I'm recording.
Get him, Sean.
So there is a little bite.
Oh, broke.
No, he just popped.
He's gone now.
It's a sad day.
It's a river of sadness.
Oh, right here.
Right here.
It's gone.
There he is, boys.
Is he on, Sean?
Okay.
Well, we got Rodney on the, uh, recording.
Not quite sure.
All right.
Oh, it is.
He's right here.
Oh, nice one.
Real, real, real, real, real.
Sean.
Sean, I'm going to let you know.
That's probably some of the best footage you've had.
That's a nice one.
It's a nice one.
Yeah, Sean.
On your rod.
Sean redemption himself real quick.
We're on the flip.
Tide's just pulling out.
If you look at sometimes when you come out here, you look at those ships.
If you're up high, they're just starting to swing.
And I said, right when they're going to swing throttle down.
And there he was.
What do you think?
Shawnee boy?
First one with me.
Yeah.
Your first fish with James.
Nice dude.
Not a bad one.
You know, we're having a good day.
What do we say at the beginning of the day?
When I get one.
When Sean's getting one, we know we're having a good day.
That's right.
We got two more.
One for me and one for James.
We saved the best for last, baby.
The tanker.
Stay tuned.
Somebody.
Yep.
What is happening to your leader?
Lies.
I think it's good.
You got too excited about it.
You did a lot.
Because I was louder.
Yeah.
You scared him.
Here we go.
Some more coming in.
Get ready.
There's a lot of fish here, boys.
He's gone.
What is happening?
Someone broke.
Yeah, there he is.
Marlin, Marlin, Marlin, Marlin, Marlin.
You got to be kidding me, bro.
Oh, if it broke, I was going to literally freaking.
You don't even know what I was going to do.
Damn it, dude.
That wasn't.
You can just tell that was another soulless fish.
He was just freaking ripping.
He literally ripped out, turned back and came right at me.
Like 100 miles an hour came at me.
He wasn't 30.
You didn't want him.
That's what you said.
Yeah, maybe that's the problem.
You're sifting through the 20s to get the fish.
The only fish I want is when the second he hits the rod,
he peels out 200 feet on the line counter.
Then I'll land him.
Yeah, there he is.
It flipped to this side, Marlin.
Go ahead.
We don't have that fast of line retrieve.
He's already gone, dude.
He's don't have that fast of line retrieve.
Unbelievable.
There he is, there he is, there he is, there he is.
James, James.
He's off.
I felt the pop.
Ronnie doesn't know what's going on here, guys.
We are on the struggle bus.
You know, even through all the tangles or you lose fish,
you know, the ups and downs, we're still on the up.
That's going to happen.
You fish every day, you're going to lose fish.
If you can, like, pull out of that, you know, keep the energy up,
there's going to be no days that are bad at fishing.
Cool, bud.
You see this guy?
Look at this cloud.
Cool, bud.
Legendary.
Come on, baby.
Come on.
Should you come back here, Marlin?
Yeah, I can.
Right here, flashing and gone.
I got to go.
I got to go, guys.
He's coming to you.
Come back here, Marlin.
Yeah, I can.
Come all the way, come all the way.
Clear that rod.
Come on, baby.
Get him, get him.
The minute that that net hits,
the atmosphere that a boat gets,
the energy, the smile, people are hooting and hollering.
I mean, that's what motivates me to come in every day and bring a smile to my face.
Here we go, baby.
Holy crap, we had...
What a grind, dude.
Dude, so we break.
No, first we had a knot come untied, which never happens.
Then we broke one.
Broke one.
Then I lost two in a row.
Then James lost one.
We thought, oh, let's switch the mojo.
The curse is broken.
Curse is broke.
We're going to smash another one here in a second.
Here we go, baby.
Last pass magic, boys.
Last pass magic.
See if the old cap can get a fit.
Buzzer beater, right here.
One minute and 48 seconds countdown.
Somebody call the vet because this puppy's sick.
Getting to hang out with Marlon, Hayden, Colt, Rodney, and Farmer John for the first time
and to experience Bowie 10 together.
What more can you ask for?
I think what keeps me coming back to Bowie 10 is I've been doing it for so long.
Like I said, I've been in the industry with my wife's family for 20 years.
And I remember the first time fishing here, bait and wait.
And as the fishery just evolves with the new technology of 360s, it's a special place.
And I'll come back every year until I'm done guiding.
The camaraderie, the brotherhood that every day we're talking to people or we're having
dinner together and just meeting the new clients and showing them a great time.
There's nothing like it.
And if you haven't done it, I recommend coming out.
The one thing I do want to say is I want to thank you, Lindsey, for always supporting
my dreams through the chaos, being away from home, and taking care of our little child, Koa.
I love you.
Thank you for always being there and letting me chase where we're at today.
Another day on the water and another story from one of the anglers who makes the Pacific
Northwest community what it is.
Huge thanks to James for bringing us along, sharing his story, and giving us a look at
what goes into more fishing.
That's what this series is all about, guys.
It's not just about the fish we catch.
It's about the people, the experience, and the years spent learning these fisheries that
create the stories behind them.
If you enjoyed part three of the Pacific Northwest Angler Series, please, guys, let us know in
the comments, drop a thumbs up, and make sure you let us know who you want to see next.
We've got a lot more stories to tell, and we'll see you on the water.
