The Russian newspaper "Siberian Express" published a video message from workers at the Severny Kuzbass company , who stated that more than 1,700 miners have not received their wages since October 2025. According to the miners, the total wage arrears have already exceeded half a billion rubles. The miners appealed to State Duma candidates and asked them to intervene. They stated that some workers had already resigned, but the debt to the workers had still not been repaid. "Many have left, some were forced to resign, but the debt to them remains. We are a patient people. But Kuzbass remembers well the consequences of silence and non-payment to the miners. The miners have always fought for their rights. And, if necessary, they will fight for them now... We are not asking for handouts; we demand what we have earned through hard mining work. And we will remember who heard us and who passed us by," the miners said. One of the most powerful shocks occurred during a spontaneous protest on July 10, 1989, in the Kuzbass city of Mezhdurechensk, which instantly spread throughout the country. Within just a couple of weeks, approximately half a million miners stopped working in all key coal basins. Later, realizing that the Soviet government's promises remained on paper and the economy continued to collapse, the miners radicalized. In the spring of 1991, strikes flared up with renewed vigor, but now they became purely political: demand for the resignation of the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Mikhail Gorbachev and the entire Union government; depriving the CPSU of its monopoly status as the ruling party and liquidating party committees at enterprises. In the RSFSR, miners supported Boris Yeltsin, and in Ukraine they began to advocate for the state independence of Ukraine and supported the Declaration of Sovereignty. The critical wage situation at the Severny Kuzbass Group's enterprises has long been known. Governor Ilya Seredyuk reported payment delays back in September 2025. Since then, the problem has only worsened.
Media previously reported that Russian authorities had begun a "managed collapse of the ruble" amid a widening federal budget deficit. For today's Russia, the strong ruble has become a problem, as oil and gas revenues in dollars, when converted into rubles, are lower than the treasury needs.
