Inside an Invisible Retreat Hidden in the English Woods

Looking Glass Lodge is a compact 49-square-meter woodland retreat in Hastings, England, designed by Michael Kendrick Architects. Carefully positioned on a sloping site, the elevated lodge uses a hybrid steel-and-timber structure, screw-pile foundations, and extensive electrochromic glazing to minimize its impact on the surrounding landscape. Inside, an open-plan layout combines a living area, bespoke kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, while Western red cedar and birch plywood create a warm connection to the forest. The design balances comfort, privacy, natural light, and ecological sensitivity, allowing the woodland to remain an essential part of the living experience.
