Discover the genius of Edwin Lutyens at Goddards, a masterpiece of the British Arts and Crafts movement, guided by renowned architectural historian Dan Cruickshank.

In this HENI Talks film, Dan Cruickshank explores the fascinating transformation of Goddards from a humble "home of rest" for nurses into a magnificent country house. Designed in 1900 for Frederick Mirrielees, the building is a testament to Lutyens' ability to fuse art, nature, and traditional craftsmanship.

Dan takes us through the medieval-inspired great hall, discovers the unique indoor skittle alley, and admires the soaring Elizabethan-style chimneys. We also explore the iconic West Garden Court, a collaborative triumph between Lutyens and the legendary garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.

Goddards remains a living example of the Arts and Crafts ideology—rejecting mass-production in favour of the beauty of natural materials and the dignity of handmade architecture.

Key highlights include:

Dan Cruickshank’s expert tour of the house and its history.
The evolution of Lutyens' "butterfly" floor plan.
The symbolic geometry of the 1910 marriage bedroom extension.
Collaborative garden design with Gertrude Jekyll.
The intricate craftsmanship of hand-wrought ironwork and local Surrey stone.

A special thanks to The Landmark Trust, the charity that restored and repaired Goddards to preserve its rich history. If you'd like to learn more about the building's architectural heritage or book a stay, you can explore details here: https://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/prop...
