China Saved 2. Nepal Saved 12,000: Is the Yarlung Tsangpo Dam the Next Disaster?

China says 21 dead at Gyirong Port. Nepal reports 1,127 dead and nearly 12,000 rescued. Same Himalayan mudslide. Two systems. Two results.
As of September 2, 2026, Beijing lists 21 dead and 541 missing, including 261 foreigners. Nepal lists 1,127 dead and about 4,858 missing, including 590 foreigners. China’s missing-to-foreigner ratio is 2. Nepal’s is 8.2. Apply Nepal’s ratio to China’s 261 missing foreigners and you get 2,144. That number may be closer to the truth, because foreign governments publish their own lists.
China sent just over 2,300 person-times and 24 helicopter flights. Nepal sent more than 21,000 people and 411 air sorties. China has 20 times Nepal’s active troops, 101 times the military helicopters, and about 700 times the military budget. China saved two people. Nepal saved nearly 12,000.
This video walks through the numbers, the drip-feed death toll, the clean-boot “rescue” video from Tibet Daily, Li Qiang’s photo-op far from the buried port, the arrest of people who posted real footage, and what journalist Gao Yu and commentator Fang Wei said about propaganda replacing rescue.
Hydrologist Wang Weiluo argues the river mouth was narrowed by construction, raising the mudslide, and that glacier and hydrological data can be used as a political chip. In 2018, a 130 million cubic meter collapse at Sedongpu blocked the Yarlung Tsangpo for about 60 hours. The barrier dam burst at about 32,000 cubic meters per second. It happened again in 2021. Beijing is now building a hydropower project bigger than the Three Gorges in that same canyon. India and Bangladesh sit downstream.
If they will not tell the truth about one border port, what happens when the next ice-rock collapse hits a reservoir?
