Scientists Finally Opened This Chamber At Göbekli Tepe — And What It Hid Was Chilling

In September twenty twenty five, during restoration work at Göbekli Tepe, archaeologists found a life-size human figure inside a wall. Not carved on it, not standing in the chamber, laid horizontally and sealed inside the stone during construction, where nobody entering the room would ever see it. Turkey's culture minister announced it directly and called it an offering. You do not entomb something in a wall unless you believe it is doing something in there. In this one I go through the pattern that find belongs to, because it has been accumulating quietly for over a decade. Three skulls recovered from the fill with deep lines deliberately incised into the bone and, on one of them, a hole drilled cleanly through the cranial vault, consistent with hanging or mounting. The researchers who published it were careful, and their conclusion was that this is a previously undocumented variation on the Neolithic skull cult, meaning Jericho had its plastered skulls and Çatalhöyük had its circulated crania but nobody anywhere was doing this specific thing. Then the carvings stop reading as symbolism. Statues decapitated deliberately after carving with the heads taken away. Figures holding severed heads out in the posture of giving rather than triumph. Pillars carved headless from the start. And if the T-shaped pillars really are stylised people, which the arms and hands and belts strongly suggest, then some of the stone people in those rooms were built without heads on purpose. The honest limit is that carved lines look identical whether they were made with reverence or contempt.
