The first specialized base for launching Russian unmanned boats is likely being created in temporarily occupied Crimea.
As Defense Express analysts note, if the facility operates at full capacity, it could become a new source of threat to shipping in the Black Sea and the Ukrainian coast, particularly Odessa and Mykolaiv.
Satellite images of the shore of Lake Donuzlav near the village of Novoozernoe suggest the possible presence of such an object. The images reveal a complex of structures reminiscent of drone ports used for the preparation and launch of Shahed-type attack drones, experts point out. The satellite images also reveal structures resembling slipways. These are essentially shelters dug into the shore, further protected on the sides by sand berms. The structures are covered with camouflage netting, which should hinder their detection and identification. Dirt roads have been laid to each of these facilities. It is believed that these roads will allow personnel to reach the shelters, and the unmanned boats themselves will also be delivered there.
The design of these slipways allows for multiple functions. They can be used for final preparation of unmanned boats before deployment, for storing ready-to-use boats, and for launching them. Other necessary infrastructure is likely being gradually built near these structures. This includes warehouses, repair and maintenance workshops where boats can be serviced and prepared for deployment, as well as antenna and technical systems necessary for communications and command.
OSINT analyst H. I. Sutton, who monitors military activity at sea, counted a total of 21 such shelters in various locations along the Donuzlav coast using new satellite imagery. According to him, construction of these shelters began as early as February 2026. This means that individual elements of the complex could theoretically already be ready for operation.
According to analysts, Russia began developing its own unmanned boats in 2022 after Ukraine developed and actively used naval drones. However, this development has long faced significant technological challenges. One of the main obstacles was the lack of a fully functional alternative to the Starlink system, which plays a crucial role in providing communications and control for Ukrainian naval drones.
However, since 2025, reports of the use of Russian unmanned boats have become increasingly frequent. This suggests that Moscow is clearly gradually increasing its capabilities in this area.
The emergence of a large-scale infrastructure for the storage, preparation, and launch of BECs in Donuzlav may indicate Russia's transition from the experimental use of such devices to their more systematic application. However, the emergence of Russian infrastructure for maritime drones did not come as a surprise to Ukraine. The defense forces have long been preparing for a possible confrontation with Russian unmanned boats. A separate area is the creation of our own unmanned aerial vehicles, specially adapted to combat enemy naval drones. The SBU began working on this issue back in 2024. Last year, the special service demonstrated a new generation of Sea Baby naval drones. One of the unveiled devices was armed with powerful weapons and, judging by its configuration, was designed specifically for intercepting and destroying enemy unmanned aerial vehicles. Specifically, a Tavria 14.5 stabilized combat module, armed with a 14.5mm KPVT heavy machine gun, was installed on board. The naval drone also received two FPV drones, for which special compartments were provided.
Thus, the Ukrainian unmanned combat vessel is effectively being transformed into a platform capable not only of carrying out its own combat missions, but also of hunting Russian unmanned boats.
