Yellowstone may look like one isolated supervolcano — but the geology beneath it stretches far beyond the borders of the national park.
Scientists studying seismic waves, GPS movement, volcanic rocks and hydrothermal chemistry have connected Yellowstone to a volcanic track extending hundreds of miles across the American West. Ancient volcanic centers across Idaho and Nevada record millions of years of activity as North America moved across a persistent source of heat deep below the continent.
