Michigan looks familiar on the surface—but beneath the Great Lakes lies a hidden world of billion-year-old volcanic rock, buried Ice Age valleys, underground water systems, ancient salt deposits, and a massive continental rift.

In this DiscoverTube investigation, we explore 20 discoveries made by USGS scientists and other researchers, including the 2,200-kilometer Midcontinent Rift, volcanic rock extending more than 30 kilometers beneath Lake Superior, huge copper deposits, submerged sinkholes, and nearly 2 cubic miles of groundwater moving through the Lake Huron drainage system each year.

From ancient volcanoes and hidden aquifers to seismic mapping and deep underground brines, Michigan’s surface is only the first layer.
