Iran is under increasing pressure from the US naval blockade, military action, and sanctions, and the Islamic Republic's leadership is concerned about the threat of new anti-government protests, Reuters reports , citing informed sources. According to three senior Iranian spokesmen, whose names were not disclosed, the Iranian authorities are finding it increasingly difficult to resist Washington's "unprecedented" measures to pressure Tehran, announced in August by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent .
US actions have sharply curtailed the country's access to foreign currency, imports, and the global financial networks that helped keep the economy afloat. Iranian leaders fear that soaring prices, weakening trade, and pressure on citizens' incomes could reignite the nationwide unrest that repeatedly rocked the ayatollahs' grip on power and brought the regime to the brink of collapse earlier this year. Sources say the Iranian leadership is particularly concerned about shortages of essential imports, including fuel and wheat. "The balance of power has shifted somewhat against Iran," said Iranian analyst Arash Azizi.
According to him, Iran's influence over the Strait of Hormuz is weakening, and the US naval blockade is "really hitting Iran hard." According to Burcu Özçelik, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (, Iran's ability to resist external pressure may depend as much on the level of public patience as on Tehran's ability to cope with economic difficulties.
"Certainly, the economic downturn increases the risk of mass unrest, but at the moment, the population appears to be in the grip of a wartime mentality," Özçelik noted. For now, the US attacks, along with civilian casualties and the anti-American ideological agenda, "are fueling a certain level of patriotic support in the spirit of 'Iran first,' loyalty, or simply patience with the current regime," the expert believes.
American and regional officials note that Iran's attempt to close Hormuz failed to cause a global economic shock and force Washington to compromise, Reuters reports. Energy markets have adjusted, and alternative supply routes remain operational. However, representatives of the countries involved in the conflict disagreed on whether the US's economic "strangulation" measures will succeed in forcing Iran to make concessions or provoke domestic unrest, deepening divisions within the leadership and weakening its authority. Billions of dollars from Iran pass through clearing accounts at US banks every year, despite sanctions banning financial transactions with the Islamic Republic, The Wall Street Journal reported , citing officials and researchers.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Tehran accesses these accounts through foreign partners who maintain relationships with American banks through the correspondent banking system. This system, which has existed for over a century, links the global financial system, "providing Iran with a multitude of hidden channels."
The Trump administration recently issued a warning to foreign banks conducting dollar transactions with Iran through correspondent accounts in the United States and called on American banks to strengthen their monitoring of transactions related to the Islamic Republic. However, sources at the publication believe that detecting such transactions is difficult due to Iran's complex network of shell companies and other obfuscation methods.
Last year, the US Treasury Department identified approximately $9 billion in Iranian funds passing through US banks. Experts believe this amount could be reduced if US banks become more proactive in identifying suspicious transactions.
