Hakone Day Trip from Tokyo 🇯🇵 Mt. Fuji Views, Volcanic Valley, Black Eggs & Hakone Shrine / Nishi V

Good morning, happy Tuesday—I think it's today. It's the first day of our trip that isn't a weekend or a public holiday here, but we woke up super early this morning, at quarter to six, to be precise. We just had breakfast and are heading down to catch the Metro, then we're going on a day trip to Hakone today. I think that's how it's pronounced—could be Hakone. I think I'm wrong, Hakone—I've heard other people say it. So we thought we'd just come to this little café, and I've just bought, well, we'll just have whatever drinks, but this Ramune Soda float, and we just want ice, so we're just going to share this, right, and figure out where the bus stop is. You buy the Hakone Free Pass to do the loop here, and all your transportation once you arrive is included, but it's pricey—it cost us about £65 for two people. I think it was a little cheaper on Klook. It's inside this little shop, and then we have to take our order and go pay here at the till. Looks so good, there we go—that's our sandwich—and the, I keep calling it things, the shaved ice, that shaved ice was so nice and so welcome in this weather, but now we're just exploring this area. That's literally the train we just took, and it's so weird. because it zigzags, so the driver keeps going from the front to the back to reverse direction forwards, but I think it's because it's like zigzagging up a mountain. Oh my goodness, this is So steep, I can't tell which one is Mount Fuji—there are obviously many mountains here. Don't look like it, maybe this one? Oh, it's too hot, it's 34 degrees, Jas, and you're making me Walk up this really steep hill just for a beer? So, edamame, do you want burdock chips? But I'll show you where we are in a moment. And I don't think they actually have hot springs; they do have them outdoors, but the water is very It's really hot, so I'm just here for my ginger ale and edamame. This is the restaurant we're at. And they prepare all the food for you. Oh, thank you, thank you. Wow, oh, that's nice, thank you. So we ordered some burdock chips, some spicy edamame, and here's my ginger ale, which looks very fancy and Jas's beer flight. There are four different types of beer here; they're going to think You're a typical drunk Brit abroad. We just came from the bar and grill up there, this is the Cafe, this is the hot spring. I'm sorry, but it's just a footbath, which is fine, but it's not really... Is it worth it? Oh, someone clearly has used it but isn't really a fan. Oh, Jas, you're so funny. Yeah. Clearly, it was nicer just to sit in the air conditioning, obviously, but look at these. views, they're insane. At least we're walking downhill now because we're heading to, I think We're getting on the ropeway first. This is the ropeway, there we go. Okay, so we've just come off the Ropeway, and we're about to head toward the cable cars, but wow, look at this—there's a viewing area. Platform, and oh, here are the foot baths—they're under these tables, Jas. Okay, this water is really hot. Look at the view—oh, they're stunning. Is that Mount Fuji on the left? This is insane. We've just come out at Awakadame, I think that's what it's called, and it is so Stunningly scenic around here. We've just been walking around for ages, but now we're going down. these steps because this is where they sell the infamous black eggs. So they're boiled in volcanic water, so the shell is black; the actual egg is just an egg, but apparently each egg you eat adds seven years to your life. So we're on the hunt for these; I think this means that there's More eggs here, Jas. We're on the second cable car, or the ropeway, as it's called, and we've got one. to ourselves this time. Anyway, take a look at the view—it's insane. There we are, approaching Lake Ashi. And then this is where we're going to take a pirate ship cruise across the lake. Wow, the Jas's huge lake, the lake's massive. That's the boat on the left, I think. Just in the nick of It's worked out really well timing-wise because the last boat is at 5 p.m. and it's already 4:45 p.m. And what I didn't realize was that with the Hakone free pass, the economy class is included as well. But you can upgrade to first class if you'd like, but I didn't even bother finding out the price. For that reason, I didn't want to know. Which one is our boat? Oh my god, we've been walking forever—we currentItem a bit of a detour. To find Hakone, oh my god, I can't even speak—Hakone Shrine, but it's not where Google Maps tells you. It is, you have to cross the road and walk down this path, but some other people are walking the other way. He told us the queue is at least an hour long, so yeah, let's see. Okay, so we've made it to the Hakone Shrine—this place is really nice, I think, if you're into taking engagement photos or something like that. Like that, but guys, I'm not queuing, okay? Because it goes around, there are more people, there are more. People are waiting here, and yeah. I've just climbed up these steps because that's the one where Everyone tries to pose next to it, and if you cross the road, sorry, that's the actual religious shrine. up there, that's where we're going now. Okay, so here is the entrance to Hakone Shrine, I am so Done, I am so done. This is our final stop of the day, and my watch tells me that I have climbed 32. sets of stairs today. Walking back toward the bus stop, so the shrine that everyone poses in front of Photos are down that way, and that's obviously leading into the water; the actual Hakone Shrine is up above. there on the right, and this is the path you take; there's a temple at the top, but it's about A 10-minute walk, or maybe 15—I can't remember—to the bus stop. What a day, we're completely worn out. I think we've taken over 12,000 steps, well, even more for you, no more for me since you do bigger steps than me, I'm shorter. We left the hotel over 12 hours ago and we've still got an one and a half hours, by the way, we're on the Romancecar, from Hakone to Shinjuku, and from Shinjuku We have a 40-minute train ride back to our hotel, but that doesn't include time spent getting lost. inside the station, which will definitely happen because that station is insane. Everyone is also really hungry, there aren't any restaurants open here—they all close at 4 p.m. It's now around 8 p.m., and as we booked the very last train out there, which was really good shower, but apart from a banana each and some rice cakes that we brought with us, that shaved ice and those edamame and the buldak chips we had at like midday, not even midday, we haven't eaten yet, so we're starving, and the only thing we found that we ran into because we saw the stripes was a 7-11. Luckily I managed to pick up the very last packet of vegetarian sushi because finding vegetarian food at a convenience store isn't easy. I actually I had a salad from a Family Mart yesterday, a little while ago—tofu, edamame, and something else—and it It was so good, but 7-Eleven had the same thing with bonito flakes, which I'm pretty sure is fish. Nightmare, but very excited for my sushi—let me show you. Here's my sushi. I'm so excited. I mean, we also picked up a Coke Zero to share; you don't have to share everything. some chocolate-covered peanuts, some crisps, a sandwich, like we just got everything because We had about two minutes to run in, grab things, pay, and leave. We're so hungry. like when you're so hungry you just grab whatever's within reach—luckily, you are allowed to eat on this train, so that was nice.
