A Major Earthquake Just Hit Off Mexico — The Tsunami Alert Came Within Minutes

On July 17, a powerful offshore earthquake struck near Chiapas, Mexico — and within minutes, authorities were already warning coastal communities about a possible tsunami before a single centimetre of unusual water had even been measured.
The earthquake was initially reported around magnitude 7.4, while Mexico’s tsunami centre forecast sea-level changes of up to 105 centimetres in some coastal areas. When the water finally arrived at Puerto Madero, the measured rise was about 32 centimetres.
