When catastrophic flooding ripped through Central Texas over 4th of July weekend, 2025, many lost their homes — and some, their lives. Survivors were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. As a wall of water tore down the San Gabriel River toward Shady River RV Park, a courageous man named Gene Tolliver risked everything to save others. Even as RVs were being swept away around him, Gene pulled neighbors to safety while his own fifth-wheel — his permanent home — was destroyed in the current. What most people didn’t know was that this wasn’t Gene’s first heartbreak. A few years earlier, he lost his wife of 46 years. Then his daughter. Then his beloved dog. And now, his home. When we met him days after the flood, he was covered in mud, still helping others — still smiling through muddy tears. Our family was supposed to stay at Shady River the night of the flood, but by divine intervention, we didn't. We woke up the morning after the rains, to see the very park we would have been at, under water. We drove out to see how we could help, but the devastation was OVERWHELMING.
