A reception ceremony was held Saturday in Sanaa for people identified by the Houthis as freed prisoners who the rebels said were released by fighters after they took over areas on Yemen's western coast. According to Associated Press more than 200 men arrived in Sanaa after being "freed", according to the Houthi head of the National Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs, Abdelkader al-Murtada. “They are all among those who had previously been agreed upon in the prisoner exchange deal that was recently agreed upon in May with the Saudi regime and its mercenaries," al-Murtada said. "The implementation of this deal was then delayed because of the intransigence of the aggression’s mercenaries,” he added. It comes as over the last two days the Iranian-backed Houthis seized the port city of Mokha and a Red Sea island, officials said. The rebels captured the island of Mayun at the entrance of the Red Sea, a key alternative for shipping Saudi oil and other exports since Iran has been targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The island's seizure was confirmed by a senior military official with Yemen’s internationally recognized government and a Houthi official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists.
About 12% of the world’s goods are typically shipped through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern end of the Red Sea. It's especially important to Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally. The escalating fighting threatens to end a fragile truce that had largely halted Yemen’s civil war since 2022. At stake are 40 million people in the Arab world’s poorest country. The conflict killed 150,000 and brought many others to the brink of famine. The surge in fighting in the past week has sent over 46,000 people fleeing, the U.N. migration agency said Friday. The Houthis have been at war with Yemen’s government since 2014, when the rebels seized much of northern and central Yemen and the capital, Sanaa. Saudi Arabia entered the war the following year on the government’s side.
