Protests broke out across parts of Syria on Sunday after the government sharply increased fuel prices, with demonstrators blocking roads and calling for the decision to be reversed as rising living costs put further pressure on households. In the countryside around Aleppo, videos circulating online showed protesters taking to the streets in Azaz and Al-Bab, chanting against the price increases and shutting down roads in opposition to the government decision.
Demonstrations were also reported in Hama, Khan Sheikhoun and Maarat al-Numan. Near Maarat al-Numan in southern Idlib countryside, protesters blocked the M5 international highway, with footage showing burning tires obstructing the roadway.
The unrest followed the government’s announcement on Sunday of fuel-price increases of up to 40% for diesel and 28% for petrol. Authorities described the hikes as temporary, saying they were necessary because of a sharp increase in the cost of securing petroleum products. Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir said the adjustment was intended to close a temporary gap between the cost of obtaining fuel and the prices charged domestically, according to state-run Syrian Arab News Agency. Syria is currently producing roughly 102,000 barrels of oil per day, while domestic consumption stands at around 325,000 barrels a day, leaving the government dependent on imports to cover the substantial shortfall. Authorities also cited an overhaul of the Baniyas refinery, which is expected to increase its processing capacity from 80,000 to 130,000 barrels per day. The Energy Ministry said it would continue reviewing fuel prices in line with global market conditions while pursuing longer-term plans to expand the country’s refining and storage capacity. The latest price increases have also triggered fierce debate on social media, highlighting growing concerns over the cost of living as Syria attempts to rebuild its economy after 14 years of war.
