In order to gain a stake in Pete Marchettis' casino, corrupt cop Pete Bannon knows that he will first have to dispose of the gambler's, Johnny O'Clock (Dick Powell). When Bannon disappears after his girlfriend (Nina Foch) is found dead from an apparent suicide, her sister, Nancy (Evelyn Keyes), suspects foul play and enlists Johnny's help. As both Nancy and his partner's wife, Nelle, fall in love with Johnny, things get even stickier when Police Inspector Koch (Lee J. Cobb) suspects him and Marchettis of the murders. When Marchettis is killed in an argument, Nelle jealously accuses Johnny. But only after taking Koch hostage so he can escape does Johnny surrender after finally realizing that Nancy truly loves him.
