The Forgotten Medieval City Buried Beneath London

Beneath the pavements of central London, beneath Trafalgar Square and the Royal Opera House and the National Gallery, lies the ghost of a thriving mediaeval trading city that most Londoners have never heard of. It was called Lundenwic, it covered sixty hectares, it traded with Europe, and it was deliberately abandoned and erased in eight hundred and eighty-six AD. Its very name survives as a single street: Aldwych. This documentary traces the full arc of Lundenwic, from the collapse of Roman London through to the twenty twenty-four excavation that proved the city was even larger than anyone imagined.
