A buried fault system beneath the Mississippi Valley has the potential to produce earthquakes across a huge part of the central United States. Around 15 million people across eight states live within the broader hazard region, where soft, water-saturated sediments can amplify shaking far beyond what many Americans associate with earthquake country.

We explore the 600-million-year-old Reelfoot Rift, new 2026 imaging of buried fault structures, evidence of pressurized fluids and possibly locked fault segments, and the massive 1811–1812 earthquakes that briefly reversed the Mississippi River and created Reelfoot Lake.
But earthquakes are only part of the story.
Farther downstream, the Mississippi is also being held in its current course by the Old River Control Structure — an enormous engineering system preventing the river from shifting toward the Atchafalaya. Floods, sediment buildup, aging infrastructure and seismic risk are all concentrated along the same vulnerable corridor.
