Although she's eagerly looking forward to singing in an upcoming music festival in the United States run by her former teacher, an expired Mexican visa is keeping Australian opera star Louise Fuller (Grace Moore) from re-entering the States. Seizing on a plan hatched by her manager, Louise pays artist Jimmy Hudson (Cary Grant) to marry her just long enough to fulfill her festival obligation. Problems arise, however, when Jimmy actually falls in love. And when Grace rebuffs his advances, Jimmy retaliates by filing for a divorce, forcing her to acknowledge her growing feelings for him before the performance can go on.
