While most people will be watching to see whether Starship reaches orbit or survives atmospheric reentry, there is another part of Flight 14 that is just as important: whether Super Heavy can complete its own mission and survive the flight.
During Flight 13, Super Heavy completed the early stages of its mission, including liftoff, ascent, and hot-staging. But when the booster reached the point where it needed to perform its boostback burn and redirect itself toward the recovery area, something went wrong. The burn ended earlier than planned, and the live feed showed the booster continuing downrange, meaning we never got to see the dramatic landing sequence that was originally expected.
At the time, there were plenty of questions about what had caused the problem. Was it an engine issue? A propellant problem? Or something inside the booster that engineers had not anticipated? Without an official explanation from SpaceX, there was no clear answer.
Fortunately, SpaceX has now revealed what happened ahead of Flight 14, and more importantly, the company has also made hardware changes intended to address the issue.

So, what actually forced Super Heavy to end its boostback burn early?
According to SpaceX, “In the terminal phase of the burn, the three center engines showed signs of ice clogging, which triggered an early end to the maneuver.”
In other words, the problem was caused by ice inside the propulsion system, which affected the three center Raptor 3 engines.
This was not the kind of failure that immediately tells you what went wrong. There was no giant explosion, no obvious structural breakup, and no complete loss of the vehicle. Instead, the problem involved something that sounds surprisingly ordinary: frozen material interfering with the propulsion system of a booster weighing hundreds of tons.
But the consequences were anything but ordinary.
