Why Raptor 4 Could Cut Starship’s Moon Refueling Problem
Recently, a strange piece of hardware was spotted inside SpaceX’s McGregor test facility.
Whoa... it looks strange, yet somehow familiar!
At first glance, the hardware looks remarkably similar to a Raptor engine. It has the familiar central thrust chamber and nozzle, along with structures representing the major components around the engine. But there is one important catch: this does not appear to be a functional flight engine. The hardware lacks the complex propellant plumbing, valves, sensors, instrumentation, and other systems you would expect to find on an operational Raptor.
Instead, it appears to be some kind of engineering or fit-check article. In other words, SpaceX may be using it to make sure the physical dimensions of the new engine actually work with the hardware around it — checking mounting points, clearances, interfaces, access, and even compatibility with the test stand before committing expensive flight hardware.

And you know if this really is connected to Raptor 4, that makes the discovery extremely interesting.
Raptor 4 is expected to push the engine significantly beyond the current Raptor 3. SpaceX is reportedly targeting around 300 tonnes-force, or roughly 2.94 meganewtons, of sea-level thrust, compared with approximately 250 tonnes-force for Raptor 3.
But more thrust isn't necessarily the most important part.
Raptor 3 already represented a major redesign by integrating much of the engine's plumbing, sensors, and thermal protection directly into the engine structure. Raptor 4 could take that philosophy even further — simplifying the engine while making it lighter, easier to manufacture, and potentially cheaper to produce at the enormous scale SpaceX ultimately needs.
