After he's saved from a gunman by Ballin Mundson (George Macready), small-time gambler Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) becomes the South American casino owner's most trusted lieutenant; a relationship that is soon complicated when Mundson's bride-to-be, Gilda (Rita Hayworth), turns out to be a woman from Johnny's past. Though he's grown suspicious of both Gilda and Johnny, Mundson's shady dealings force him to leave Argentina and, ultimately, to fake his own death. But when Johnny and Gilda end up together in a stormy and abusive marriage, Mundson's unexpected return for revenge exposes his own collaboration with the Nazis that leaves his life the one that's placed in danger.
