The Grand Canyon Is Hiding Something — Scientists Just Rewrote Its History
The Grand Canyon exposes nearly 2 billion years of Earth’s history—but more than half of that record is missing. Now, new research suggests that a vanished mega-escarpment, possibly around 1 kilometer high, may help explain how up to 8 kilometers of rock disappeared from parts of western North America.
But that is only the beginning.
In this DiscoverTube investigation, we examine 20 discoveries that are rewriting the Grand Canyon’s history. Researchers have traced a missing chapter of the Colorado River using ancient sediment, analyzed approximately 10,000 volcanic crystals, compared geological evidence with fish DNA and reconstructed drainage systems that existed before the modern river crossed the canyon.
The evidence suggests that the Colorado River did not carve the Grand Canyon from a completely untouched landscape. Ancient continental breakup, tectonic uplift, enormous erosion, vanished lakes and older valleys had already transformed the region hundreds of millions of years earlier.
We also explore the canyon’s hidden groundwater systems, caves, fossils, uranium deposits, wildfire damage, flash floods and the ongoing movement of sediment through the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon may look permanent—but scientists are still watching it change.
