Florida’s Underwater Discoveries Are More Mysterious Than Scientists Expected

Florida is hiding an entire second landscape beneath its water.

Scientists have discovered deep blue holes, freshwater springs emerging from the seafloor, drowned Ice Age landscapes and archaeological sites that were submerged as sea levels rose. One of the most remarkable finds, the Page-Ladson site, preserves evidence of humans in Florida around 14,550 years ago, alongside mastodon remains.

Farther offshore, researchers are exploring formations such as the 425-foot-deep Green Banana Blue Hole, while NOAA, USGS and university teams continue mapping Florida’s hidden aquifer, submerged caves, coral reefs and ancient coastlines.
