Les Mésadventures d'un Photographe (1908) - (The Mischances of a Photographer)

Released in 1908, Les Mésadventures d'un Photographe (The Mischances of a Photographer) is a short silent comedy directed by the pioneering French filmmaker Georges Méliès. Better known for his elaborate fantasy and trick films, Méliès also produced a number of comic sketches, and this film centres on the everyday practice of studio photography. Set in a photographic studio, it follows a photographer attempting to make portraits while dealing with increasingly disruptive customers and practical mishaps. The film was produced by Méliès's Star Film Company and was originally distributed for the American market.

Although presented as a comedy, the film offers an interesting glimpse into early twentieth-century photographic practice. The studio camera, painted backdrops, posing techniques and portrait process reflect the conventions of commercial photography during the period, while Méliès uses the setting to build a series of visual gags. The film also demonstrates how photography had already become a familiar part of everyday life by 1908, allowing audiences to immediately recognise the routines and frustrations of having a portrait taken.
