Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is the annual Christian observance commemorating the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ during the week preceding Easter Sunday. Throughout Spain, the celebration takes the form of public processions organised by Catholic confraternities known as cofradías and hermandades. Many of these organisations were established between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries and continue to preserve centuries of religious tradition through the carrying of sculptural pasos, ceremonial music, liturgical symbolism and penitential processions. Although united by a common religious purpose, the traditions, routes, costumes and artistic heritage of Semana Santa vary considerably between Spanish cities and regions.

The photographs in this collection were made by Pedro J Pacheco, a documentary photographer originally from Murcia who has lived in Málaga since 2016. While the collection includes processions photographed in Murcia, the majority record Semana Santa in Málaga, one of Spain's largest and most distinctive Holy Week celebrations. His photographs document nazarenos wearing traditional penitential robes and pointed hoods, confraternity members carrying richly decorated tronos and pasos, religious sculptures depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Virgin Mary, and the thousands of participants who take part in the city's annual processions. In 2017, Pacheco was granted official press accreditation, allowing him to document the complete Holy Week programme from Palm Sunday through to Easter Sunday.

Produced between 2014 and 2017, Pedro J Pacheco's photographs provide a detailed documentary record of Semana Santa in both Murcia and Málaga. His work records the ceremonial dress, religious sculpture, historic architecture, confraternities and processional traditions that define Holy Week while documenting one of Spain's most significant annual religious observances. Published through Wikimedia Commons under a Creative Commons licence, the collection forms an extensive visual archive of contemporary Semana Santa and preserves the regional character and continuity of these longstanding Spanish traditions.
