Hamburg 1945: 900 thousand people are homeless - AI-restored film footage

Summer has arrived in June 1945, but Hamburg is one of the most heavily destroyed cities in Germany. Only a fifth of all homes are intact, around half of the factories and port facilities have been destroyed, and 900,000 people are homeless. Near the harbor, not even the facades are still standing. The Woolworth store on Jungefernstieg is still barricaded. Hardly a stone is left standing, even at the Landungsbrücken. The American soldiers enjoy the sunshine and look at the harbor docks, where a German submarine is still lying. Kaispeicher A is largely undestroyed.
