The Pelican long-range aircraft-type drone , which was used during the massive attack on Moscow on September 20, can cover distances of up to a thousand kilometers with a warhead weighing 90-100 kg.
Bohdan Dolyntse, an aviation market expert, reported this on Radio NV. "Regarding the means used, many immediately interpreted this as the possible use of a Ukrainian long-range ballistic missile. However, there is no confirmation of ballistics," Dolyntse noted.
He noted that this is an attack drone, but there is no precise information about its tactical and technical characteristics. At the same time, according to his observations, taking into account the published videos, one can come to the conclusion that we are talking about a "drone with an aerodynamic profile" similar to the Shahed attack drone.
"That is, it's a flat, ballistic missile with a long range. How close it is, beyond its appearance, to the solutions used by Russia remains an open question," Dolintse added.
It's also worth noting that this Ukrainian drone flew a distance of at least 800–1,000 km. And, judging by the published videos, the weight of this attack drone's warhead is likely comparable to that of the Geran-2—approximately 90–100 kg.
As reported, a massive attack using various Ukrainian weapons occurred in the Moscow region on the night of September 20. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Pelican was used, among other things. In this regard, media reports have emerged that this is the first official use of the Pelican ballistic missile, known as the FP-7. According to Anatoly Khrapchinsky, director of defense enterprise development and an Air Force reserve officer, one element of the attack on Moscow could have been the use of a ballistic missile against the Voronezh air defense system in order to create a "blind corridor" in Moscow's defense system for the passage of other weapons. "If the Pelican name truly refers to our FP-7 ballistic missile, then speculation about its direct approach to Moscow lacks any purely physical or geographical basis. The stated operational range of this system is up to 300 km, while the distance to the Russian capital from safe launch sites is more than 450-500 km," Khrapchinsky said.
At the same time, he emphasized that the FP-7 zone includes the Voronezh region, a target for which was explicitly stated in the head of state's report. "A ballistic missile with a hypersonic terminal velocity and a flight time of up to three minutes could be effectively deployed at its standard range, playing a key role in penetrating the enemy's entire defense system. The Voronezh air defense hub is the forward southeastern radar control point for the entire Moscow Industrial Region and the enemy's 1st Air Defense and Missile Defense Army. The anti-aircraft regiments, early warning stations, and low-altitude radars deployed there provide Moscow with the 15-20 minute lead time to prepare its firepower for interception," Khrapchinsky explained.
