The Twins Born 87 Days Apart (2012–2026) | Amy & Katie Evolution

In 2012, twin sisters Amy and Katie Jones-Elliott entered the world in a way that seems almost impossible: they were born 87 days apart.

Amy was born extremely prematurely on June 1, 2012, at around 24 weeks of pregnancy and weighed just 1 lb 3 oz. But after her birth, something extraordinary happened - their mother Maria’s contractions stopped. Instead of being delivered immediately after her sister, Katie remained inside the womb while Amy fought for survival in neonatal care.

For nearly three more months, one twin was already living outside the womb while the other continued developing inside their mother. On August 27, after the pregnancy had reached 36 weeks, Katie was finally born - 87 days after her twin sister.

This rare phenomenon is known as delayed-interval delivery. In selected multiple pregnancies, labor can stop after the first baby is delivered, allowing the remaining baby to continue developing for days or even weeks. Amy and Katie’s extraordinary 87-day separation became one of the most famous examples ever reported.
