Dementia and Dining: Why Choice Matters When Mama Is Not In The Mood

When I arrived at the facility, Mama wasn’t sitting in the dining hall. She wanted to eat by herself — and the amazing staff made that happen by pulling a small table to the side, just where she felt most at ease. 💜

Sometimes, people living with dementia need peace and quiet instead of stimulation. And that’s okay. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable, especially when it comes to simple things like mealtime.

This moment reminded me that caregiving is about listening — not just to words, but to body language, behavior, and unspoken needs.

As much as people struggle with understanding it...it is the same with having her own space at the facility. She does not always want to be at my home.
