Although armored vehicles are now rarely used in assault operations, compared to the early years of full-scale warfare, the debate about the necessity of tanks in modern warfare continues. A recent incident in which a Russian tank withstood nearly 40 Ukrainian drone strikes has become yet another argument in favor of the necessity of such equipment, as reported by EUobserver .
The publication, in particular, focuses on whether the tank can be adapted to a modern battlefield saturated with drones. The author cites a recent statement by Azov Corps commander Denis Prokopenko. "When you see a video of a burning tank online, believe me, it wasn't just one, two, or three drones that hit it. Destroying enemy equipment prepared for a mechanized breakthrough isn't as easy as it seems," the officer said.
The author of the publication also mentions a video released by the Russians, in which, according to the Russians, the tank crossed a dangerous section of up to 15 km, surviving approximately 40 drone strikes.
The vehicle had metal armor around the turret. The attacks damaged the gun barrel and observation devices, but the tank remained operational. Eventually, after being hit by a heavy munition from a Ukrainian Baba Yaga drone, the crew was forced to abandon the vehicle. However, the Russians claim the tank was subsequently used again, and the crew allegedly fired ten more shots.
As the publication notes, this is not the only instance in which Ukrainians have had to deploy a significant number of drones to stop Russian armored vehicles. Military analyst Christoph Timowski wrote about an incident in which 125 drones were allegedly needed to destroy two or three tanks.
Therefore, Russia continues to strengthen the protection of its new tanks. In September, the Russian ground forces received a batch of T-90M and T-72B3M tanks. Some of the vehicles are equipped with the so-called "Tsar-Mangal" – a structure made of steel elements and rubber strips above the turret. Additionally, the tanks are equipped with explosive reactive armor, electronic warfare systems, and the Arena-M active protection system.
However, analysts estimate that tank modernization alone does not guarantee the return of large-scale armored breakthroughs. Tactics play a key role: Russian infantry could attempt to approach the positions of Ukrainian drone operators, artillery could attack their launch sites, and armored vehicles could be deployed in waves.
However, analysts cited by EUobserver caution against jumping to conclusions about the end of tank vulnerability. Jakub Janowski of the Oryx project emphasizes that the number of hits required to disable a vehicle may be significantly fewer than the number of hits required to completely destroy it. A single successful tank penetration does not indicate a fundamental change in the situation on the front.
