The United States–Canada border is the longest international land boundary in the world, extending approximately 5,525 miles (8,891 kilometres), including the border between Alaska and Canada. The boundary passes through thirteen U.S. states and eight Canadian provinces and territories, crossing forests, mountain ranges, rivers, lakes and agricultural land, as well as major ports of entry linking the two countries. Responsibility for securing the U.S. side of the border rests with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security established in 2003. CBP is responsible for customs enforcement, border security, immigration control and facilitating lawful international trade and travel at official ports of entry and between them.

This photographic series documents CBP operations along the northern border, recording the personnel, facilities, vehicles and specialist equipment used in the day-to-day work of the agency. The photographs include Border Patrol agents, ports of entry, marine units, aircraft, remote surveillance systems, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and patrol vessels operating in a wide range of environments. Locations represented within the collection include sections of the border in Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, illustrating the varied geographical conditions encountered across the northern frontier.

This photographic series documents U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations along the United States–Canada border, recording Border Patrol officers carrying out routine enforcement activities in a variety of rural environments. The photographs show officers conducting vehicle checks, searching roadside border areas, farmland and woodland, using trained detection dogs, and operating both standard patrol vehicles and specialised off-road vehicles. The collection also documents the apprehension, detention and transportation of individuals suspected of crossing the border unlawfully, providing a record of the procedures and operational activities undertaken by CBP officers. U.S. Border Patrol is responsible for monitoring the land border between the official ports of entry, with operational sectors covering Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
