The most valuable ground in an ancient settlement was not always where people chose to build. Archaeologists have uncovered fortified communities where houses crowd the outer zones while large central areas remain strangely empty, even when space elsewhere appears limited. In other places, monumental entrances lead toward open ground containing surprisingly little permanent architecture. These spaces were clearly included within the settlement, sometimes protected by the same walls and positioned exactly where we might expect the most important buildings to stand. Yet generation after generation left them largely unobstructed. Why? They may have accommodated gatherings, livestock, ceremonies, markets, seasonal activities, or functions that required temporary structures leaving almost no trace. But in many cases, no single explanation accounts for the evidence. The mystery is therefore not what ancient people constructed at the center of these places, but why they sometimes considered that ground important enough to protect—and important enough not to build on at all.
