April 23, 2025 – PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME
Inspired by the grand palazzi of the 16th century, Palazzo Massimo was built between 1883 and 1887 by the Jesuit father Massimiliano Massimo—based on a design by Camillo Pistrucci—to house the new Jesuit College. In 1981, the State acquired the building to serve as one of the new venues for the National Roman Museum. A radical renovation was entrusted to Costantino Dardi, and the Palazzo opened to the public in 1998. Since then, numerous updates have enlivened the original layout, weaving together various exhibition threads based on both chronological and thematic criteria; by referencing the contexts in which the artifacts were discovered, the display evokes the rich, dense arrangement of diverse works typical of crowded 16th-century collections. Today, walking through the halls of Palazzo Massimo is like turning the pages of a magnificent book. Spanning four floors, the museum houses some of the greatest masterpieces of Roman art—sculptures, reliefs, frescoes, mosaics, stuccoes, and sarcophagi. Like the rest of the National Roman Museum’s collection, these works originate from excavations conducted in Rome and the surrounding area from 1870 onwards.
