A resident of occupied Donetsk showed what everyday life in the city is like after 12 years of Russian occupation. Her apartment has no running water or electricity, and the expensive appliances she purchased after the renovation are practically idle. The woman recorded a video on her mobile phone and walked through the apartment, showing the aftermath of the utility collapse. She plugged in electrical outlets and demonstrated that the lights weren't working. She also showed the kitchen, where instead of using the appliances properly, people had to use a plastic basin. She sarcastically explains that instead of all this expense, she could have just bought a plastic basin. There's a basin in the kitchen, with traces of rusty, dirty water visible at the bottom: " Nothing works! Why waste money on all this? "
Social media users note that until 2014, Donetsk was one of the most developed and wealthiest cities in Ukraine. It was a major industrial, cultural, and business center with modern infrastructure, universities, a stadium, an airport, restaurants, shopping centers, and a normal urban life. After Russia's arrival, the city fell into a state of degradation. Donetsk remains in a critical water supply situation, exacerbated by the shutdown of the main Seversk Donets-Donbas water supply, severe deterioration of utility networks, and regular power outages at pumping stations. The newly constructed Don-Donbas water pipeline only partially covers the city's needs, and the water supplied is often industrial grade and requires extensive filtration.

Media previously reported, after the Russian occupation, Mariupol was left in ruins, and its residents are surviving in the devastation. Mariupol residents who spoke anonymously to BBC journalists assert that what Russian television channels show is merely a pretty picture that bears no resemblance to reality. The apocalyptic aftermath of the shelling and bombing remains a bitter reality for city residents. As one resident recounted, facades on the main streets are being repaired exclusively for cameras , while around the corner are dilapidated buildings where people continue to live in walls that are "barely holding up . " According to the UN, about 90% of the city's housing stock was damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people either died or were forced to flee. A refugee from Mariupol described the city as once beautiful, but now in decline. She said the Russian authorities only repaired the buildings in the central square, while in other areas, nothing was built on the sites of demolished houses. She noted that the rubble was cleared, but the bodies of the dead were not removed ; they were simply loaded onto trucks along with the trash and taken out of the city. The key problem remains the lack of water. One interviewee reported that water appears for a day or two, then disappears for three days. The water is so polluted that even after boiling, it is "scary to drink" and tastes like Coca-Cola .
