As weather conditions worsen in the fall and winter, Russian troops may intensify their attempts to infiltrate small infantry groups toward Zaporizhzhia along the bed of the former Kakhovka Reservoir, according to the US-based Institute for the Study of War, citing Ukrainian military personnel and experts.
American analysts drew attention to an interview given to Suspilnoye by Dmitry "Perun" Filatov, commander of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, back in August.
He explained that, since the Russians' primary efforts in August were focused on the Dobropillya and Konstantinovka sectors, aggressor activity in the Zaporizhzhia sector was relatively low. However, even then, the Russians attempted to penetrate Ukrainian positions daily in small groups, typically consisting of two or three infantrymen.
According to the military man, the greatest risks in the fall may arise in the area of the former Kakhovka Reservoir. Dense vegetation, high humidity, and fog make reconnaissance and control of the area difficult. Last year, Russian troops already took advantage of these conditions to infiltrate Primorskoye.
"We are not talking about conducting a full-scale offensive in this area, but about conducting the same infiltration operations, but in more favorable conditions," Perun explained.
The village is currently controlled by the Ukrainian Defense Forces, but attempts by Russian infantry to advance in the area continue.
The day before, Ukrainian military analyst Konstantin Mashovets wrote on his Telegram channel that the Russians, unable to break through toward Zaporizhzhia by land, are now actively trying to penetrate along the bottom of the former reservoir. "In this regard, it's worth noting that the enemy command is quite active. They made one such attempt a week ago, which resulted in one such Russian group penetrating quite deep – as far as Malokaterynivka, where it was blocked," he writes.
As ISW notes, this same information is generally confirmed in publications by Russian "war correspondents."
