Ukraine is in talks with European countries and arms manufacturers regarding the urgent purchase of tens of thousands of 20mm shells for F-16 fighter jets , Bloomberg reports , citing sources familiar with the matter.

The ammunition in question is for the F-16's automatic cannon, which is currently the most efficient and cost-effective way to counter Russian jet-powered drones. According to sources, approximately 150 rounds are required to intercept one such drone, with the overall requirement potentially reaching approximately 10,000 rounds per day.

The need for such weapons has increased amid Russia's increased use of Shahed-series jet drones. As the publication notes, these drones are significantly faster than previous piston-engine drones, making them difficult for ground-based mobile groups to intercept, effectively bringing their performance closer to that of cruise missiles.

As Bloomberg notes, Ukraine currently suffers from a severe shortage of traditional anti-aircraft missiles, particularly for Patriot systems, but 20mm ammunition for the F-16 is available globally in significantly larger quantities. However, Ukraine needs large quantities quickly.

At the same time, Ukraine is attempting to expedite the transfer of three Belgian F-16s, which are currently expected to be delivered by the end of 2026. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Kyiv has already received ammunition for the fighters from Belgium, Spain, and other countries.

In addition, Ukraine is actively working on its own systems to combat jet drones.

United Unmanned Systems military expert Julian Röpke commented on the shortage of air-to-air missiles for F-16 fighters and explained Ukraine's response.

"The MiG-29s are still equipped with R-60M missiles. These are Ukrainian-made missiles, or I don't know if they're still being produced in Ukraine, but at least they're Soviet-era air-to-air missiles that are in use. Ukraine still has some stockpiles, and they're probably also getting new ones, perhaps from other post-Soviet countries or, say, countries that were behind the Iron Curtain. I think we're talking about several countries in the Balkan region," he said in an interview with War & Politics 24 .

When it comes to these very modern air-to-air missiles, he said, a problem arises again. "Only the Americans can supply them, and they're not willing to do so now, at least not for free. But even if the Europeans try to buy them, it takes months before even a few missiles reach Ukraine," the analyst explained.

In his opinion, the same applies to interceptors for the Patriot.

"I think President Zelenskyy just said this, that we're not talking about 20 or 200 units arriving. We're talking about one, two, or three missiles at a time, which are then distributed across the country. So, it's a terrible situation. At the same time, we've heard again that the Patriot system is supposed to be produced in Ukraine under license. I doubt that," Röpke said.
