After months of Ukrainian attacks on oil refineries , which led to gasoline shortages in Russia, Russians began actively buying Chinese-made electric vehicles, The New York Times reports .

According to the authors, in the summer, as the fuel crisis in Russia intensified, Chinese-made electric vehicles became more expensive. For example, a Great Wall Motor car increased in price by $2,000. Since then, the Chinese electric vehicle market in Russia has doubled. Moreover, people are buying cars both in showrooms and on the used market. Furthermore, Russian auto factories, which had been assembling Western cars before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, have reoriented themselves to assembling Chinese electric vehicles.

However, Russia lacks sufficient infrastructure for electric vehicle mobility. There are approximately 8,000 charging stations across Russia, a third of which are in Moscow and the surrounding region. Consequently, queues form at electric charging stations in Moscow, although not as long as those at gasoline stations. The authors noted that the sharp increase in demand for electric vehicles indicates that fuel shortages are causing "anxiety" among Russians. This, they believe, "threatens to become a serious political problem."

The fuel crisis in Russia continues, with queues at gas stations still being reported. Furthermore, due to the low quality of gasoline and diesel fuel, more and more cars are breaking down. The publication also noted that electric vehicle sales have surged globally. This was driven by the US and Israel's war with Iran, which led to a sharp rise in oil and gasoline prices. According to the International Energy Agency, electric vehicles are likely to account for a record 29 percent of all new car purchases globally this year. Moreover, electric vehicle sales increased in more than 90 countries, including Brazil, Australia, India, and South Korea. The International Energy Agency stated that the energy crisis "has clearly strengthened the case for electric vehicles."

Ukraine has damaged 51% of Russia's oil refining capacity, which is a significant blow to the occupiers' economy, their ability to carry out aggression and supply their troops, said Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara . According to him, the Ukrainian military strikes are the result of "carefully planned, planned, and systematic actions" aimed at draining the Russian military machine and destroying its military and economic potential. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense also reported in a Telegram post that the Moscow, Yaroslavl, KINEF, Ust-Luga, Perm, Ilsky, Saratov, Syzran, and other oil refineries were recently hit. "The consequences of Ukrainian operations are not always immediately visible. But the effects are cumulative and produce tangible results," the publication emphasizes. Khmara noted that Ukraine's "deep strikes" are bringing the war to Russian territory. This is precisely one of the Ministry of Defense's priorities.
